Two River Theater Highlights Grants, New Programs, Partnerships and More in 2013-14

Two River Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst, has concluded its 20th Anniversary Season, highlighted by far-reaching new-play development activities supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The season was bookended by the Two River directorial debuts of acclaimed actors Joel Grey (Paul Osborn's On Borrowed Time) and Michael Cumpsty (Wendy Wasserstein's Third). Actor, comedian, and writer Lauren Weedman is heading to town to create a one-woman improvised theater show Well I Think You're Beautiful Philadelphia based on her experiences in the city. Praised for her "unflinchingly honest comic observation" (Seattle Weekly), Weedman is a series regular on HBO's hit new show Looking, which chronicles the struggles, loves, and lives of three gay men in San Francisco. She has garnered a cult reputation for her quick wit and spitfire jokes through her acting and comedic roles, and this new work marks her Philadelphia debut. (more...)

The Old Globe presents Christopher Durang's Tony Award-winning farce Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, which will include Candy Buckley as Masha, Marcia DeBonis as Sonia, Tyler Lansing Weaks as Spike, Allison Layman as Nina, Martin Moran as Vanya, and Haneefah Wood as Cassandra. Jessica Stone will direct, based on the Tony-nominated Broadway direction of Old Globe Associate Artist Nicholas Martin, whose loss on April 30 devastated the theatre world*. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike will run now through June 22, 2014 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe'sConrad Prebys Theatre Center. Rising Phoenix Rep to Present BARN, 3/23-4/10

After the critical success of its most recent Off-Broadway production, the Lucille Lortel Award winning All the Rage by Martin Moran (produced with piece by piece productions and The Barrow Group), acclaimed company Rising Phoenix Repertory returns to its longtime downtown home with the world premiere of Barn by Charlotte Miller, directed by Michael Padden. The play will be staged for eleven performances only at the Seventh Street Small Stage, where the company has produced new plays site-specifically for eight years in addition to more than 25 fully produced new plays in its lauded Cino Nights series. The production will run from March 23 - April 10, 2014, and features Brian Miskell, Laura Ramadei, and Sanford Wilson. (more...)

Last night, the Tony Award-winning score from Titanic: The Musical was performed live at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, featuring almost the entire cast from the original Broadway musical, over 200 singers, and the enlarged forces of the professional New York City Chamber Orchestra. The production was directed by Don Stephenson, with Music Direction by Kevin Stites.
