Loudon Wainwright III to Perform at Ridgefield Playhouse, 9/12

Captain Calvin Spalding from M*A*S*H (the singing surgeon) and the singer of "Dead Skunk (in the Middle of the Road)" is going to light up the stage of The Ridgefield Playhouse on Friday, September 12, at 8 p.m. Loudon Wainwright III is a critically acclaimed songwriter who won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album High, Wide and Handsome: The Charlie Poole Project. Legendary artists including Johnny Cash and Bonnie Raitt have covered his songs --from folk, rock and blues to comedy. This event is part of the Doyle Coffin Singer/Songwriter Series. (more...)

Wendy Whelan, whom The New York Times has called 'America's greatest contemporary ballerina,' has danced with New York City Ballet for nearly 30 years. With the company, she has mastered Balanchine's neo-classical repertory, dance classics such as Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake and created works with many of today's leading choreographers. Following hip surgery and a successful recovery period, Whelan, 46, will return to City Ballet this spring season and will dance her final performance with the company on October 18. (more...)

Toronto Alexander Neef, General Director of the Canadian Opera Company, today released details of the company's new opera commission, Hadrian, composed by internationally acclaimed Canadian-American singer, songwriter and composer Rufus Wainwright with libretto by award-winning Canadian actor, director and playwright Daniel MacIvor. Signaling the start of the social season, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will hold its annual Gala Concert tonight, September 7 at 8:30 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. This year's Gala will be led by BSO Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly. The concert features the band Pink Martini with vocalist Storm Large, who will collaborate with the BSO for an intoxicating mix of cabaret, samba, jazz and Hollywood musicals.
