Famed gossip columnist Liz Smith -- "the Grande Dame of Dish" -- has won countless honors, including an Emmy Award, in her long career. But she's never before been depicted on the stage. In "Theater Boys" -- the new musical comedy by ASCAP Award-winner Chip Deffaa, now playing at the 13th Street Repertory Theater -- she's not only a character in the show, she's the subject of a whole song about her, a rousing fast-boogie simply titled "Liz Smith." That song will also be heard on the show's cast album (sung by Ricky Schroder and the ensemble), being released October 18th. (more...)

In 1994, Bette Midler returned to New York after nearly 20 years in Los Angeles, and started the New York Restoration Project, a non-profit organization devoted to bringing abandoned and neglected parks, gardens, and open spaces in all five boroughs back to life. NYRP includes the beautiful New Leaf Cafe in Fort Tryon Park as part of its success, and is committed to helping restore parks and gardens devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Over seventy young people from across the UK have joined together at the National Portrait Gallery, London, to showcase their creative and personal responses to the First World War and its impact on their local areas, and to see their finished artwork go live on the National Portrait Gallery's website. The young people are all participants in National Memory - Local Stories, a nation-wide project led by the Gallery to help young people uncover personal connections with the First World War as part of its four-year programme commemorating the centenary.
