Cygnet Theatre will kick off its 13th season in July as director Sean Murray mounts the San Diego Premiere of Dogfight, a romantic and comic musical adaptation of the 1991 movie with River Phoenix and Lili Taylor. Winner of the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical in 2013, Dogfight represents the new generation of voices in musical theatre creation. The production runs July 16 - August 23. It's 1967 and a young Marine, returning from a life-changing experience in Vietnam, is on a bus bound for San Francisco, the site of his last hurrah in 1963: a momentous night before he shipped out for Okinawa in the company of friends and cohorts with whom he'd created a bond he thought would last forever. That initial scene in Dogfight the hit off-Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a book by Peter Duchan, based upon a little-known movie of the same name that starred River Phoenix and Lili Taylor serves as a gateway to the story of Eddie Birdlace and his fellow Marines and a winsome, idealistic young woman who left her imprint on his heart despite his best efforts to forget her. Just last night, he New Group just honored Founding Artistic Director Scott Elliott and celebrated its 20th Anniversary season. Scott Elliott is an award-winning stage director, filmmaker and the founding Artistic Director of The New Group, where he recently directed the critically acclaimed revival of David Rabe's Sticks and Bones. At The New Group, he has directed world premieres by Thomas Bradshaw, Ayub Khan Din, Francine Volpe, Erika Sheffer and Tommy Nohilly; and the world premiere of the 2010 musical The Kid (Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical; Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award nominations for Outstanding Musical). Other credits include The New Group's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie starring Cynthia Nixon; David Rabe's Hurlyburly; and numerous collaborations with Ayub Khan Din, Wallace Shawn and Mike Leigh. Broadway credits include Present Laughter, Barefoot in the Park, The Threepenny Opera, The Women and Three Sisters. On Monday, January 26, PEN American Center, in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), will present a public reading and conversation to mark the publication of Mohamedou Ould Slahi's Guantanamo Diary (Little, Brown & Company). The first and only diary by a still-imprisoned Guantanamo detainee to be released publicly, Guantanamo Diary is an authoritative first-hand account of imprisonment, torture, and day-to-day human interactions in the world's most infamous detention camp. For this unprecedented international publishing event, a stellar line-up including authors and PEN members Michael Cunningham, Joshua Ferris, Nicole Krauss, Francine Prose, Douglas Rushkoff, and Luc Sante, visual artist Molly Crabapple and actress Lili Taylor will join forces to read from the book. Following the reading, Philip Gourevitch will moderate a conversation between Larry Siems, Guantanamo Diary editor and former PEN American Center Freedom to Write Director, and Nancy Hollander, a lead attorney for Mohamedou Ould Slahi. Suzanne Nossel, PEN American Center Executive Director, and Hina Shamsi, Director, ACLU National Security Project and part of Slahi's legal team, will offer opening remarks. (more...)

The innovative downtown theater company Naked Angels, under the leadership of Artistic Director Liz Carlson, presents 'Songs At The Seaport,' a benefit concert featuring selections from the folk concert play SeaWife co-created by Seth Moore (The Man With American Skin) and indie-folk rock sextet The Lobbyists. The event will be held on Monday, November 17 at 7:00PM in the historic Melville Gallery at South Street Seaport Museum (213 Water Street) and will featured performances by The Lobbyists with encore sets by emerging talents The Humble Grapes, Stephanie Hsu and Jeanna Phillips. All proceeds will benefit the development of SeaWife, aiming to debut in New York City in the 2015-2016 season. (more...)
