54 BELOW kicked off the "Frank and Friends" portion of 54 BELOW Celebrates Frank Wildhorn concerts last night with Wildhorn at the piano as a handful of his friends, new and old, take the stage to sing his classic hits. Keeping true to the cabaret setting, many of the songs were re-orchestrated to be bluesy, jazz masterpieces that perfectly filled the snug venue and gave the numbers a new life. (more...)

Before the finale of Tuesday night's Café Carlyle show celebrating the varied compositions of Frank Wildhorn, the Grammy and Tony Award-winning composer quoted his frequent collaborator, lyricist Jack Murphy, as once offering that “Great singers are a songwriter's best friends.” Even though Murphy's thought is hardly original, no words could be more true after listening to the scintillating songstress Jane Monheit and the performing powerhouse Clint Holmes deliver 16 solid songs that but wouldn't exactly be called classic examples of what passes for the late 20th century Great American Songbook. After completing its 39th Mainstage season, Hangar Theatre announces the fall performances of Back to the Garden, a musical tribute to folk-rock trailblazers Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Laura Nyro, as a continuation of its annual CabarETC series playing September 20-21 at 8:00pm. Challenged by the traditional images of women in the music-industry, these prolific singer/songwriters paved the way for women in music, art, and life by bravely exploring territory outside the accepted confines of popular music. Back to the Garden celebrates these women, their influence and inspiration, directed by Amy Jones and featuring Melissa Hammans, Maddy Wyatt, and Shaleah Adkissonperforming with Julia Adamy (bass), Molly MacMillan(keys), with Barbara Merjan (drums), and Sue Terwilliger (guitar).
