Bad haircuts can be tragic, but none more so than for Samson, the Biblical figure whose strength was sapped the moment his mullet was gone. The treacherous shearing by a revenge-seeking Delilah launched centuries of retelling, including Camille Saint-Saëns' opera 'Samson and Delilah' which the Washington National Opera is currently presenting at the Kennedy Center in repertoire with 'Don Giovanni.'

The fifth annual VOICE Gala is slated for March 23, 2020 in a regal culmination of the weeklong program of VOICExperience's Opera As Drama program. This annual gala, which supports scholarships for the Milnes VOICE Programs, will take place at the Harmonie Club, one of New York City's oldest, private social clubs, located at 4 East 60th Street in Manhattan.

The 37th Schwabacher Recital Series continues on Wednesday, March 4, with its second performance of 2020. San Francisco Opera Adler Fellows Simone McIntosh and Zhengyi Bai take the stage at San Francisco's Dianne and Tad Taube Atrium Theater for a musical exploration of love and heartbreak, accompanied by Robert Mollicone on the piano. Their program will spotlight Olivier Messiaen's rarely performed Harawi, Richard Strauss' beloved Opus 27 songs and selections from Vincenzo Bellini's Sei Ariette da Camera.

For over 40 years, an unlikely place has been ground zero for the professional development of young singers with their sights set on careers in opera, musical theater and classical music. Central City, Colo., a small mountain town 35 miles west of Denver, is typically known for its mining history and casino resorts. However, during the summer months it becomes a performing arts mecca, with select rising stars traveling to Colorado for the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program during Central City Opera's annual Festival.

The 2019 first-place winner of last Thursday's Manhattan School of Music's prestigious Alan M. and Joan Taub Ades Vocal Competition is soprano Hyeree Shin, a Professional Studies Certificate candidate at the School. Ms. Shin received $20,000 in prize money to be used towards her professional development.
