It’s hard to tell the entire story of The Drifters. Not least because the group became a revolving door of something like 60 different members over the decades. And therein lies the problem for The Drifters Girl – it tries to take on the whole story, mainly from the perspective of their trailblazing African American manager Faye Treadwell.

The first 2023 / '24 tour dates have been announced for The Drifters Girl, the new musical which tells the remarkable story of one of the world's greatest vocal groups and the woman who made them.

The World Premiere cast album for The Drifters Girl has been recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and is due for release on Friday 6 May 2022, by Tag8 Music, with BMG Rights Management (UK) Limited, Treadwell Entertainment Group and Showtime Productions Ltd. 

The Drifters Girl, despite that missing apostrophe, should be a smash-hit jukebox musical. A plethora of familiar hits, a remarkably talented cast and the inspiring story of Faye Treadwell, the African-American woman who took over as the group’s manager and steered them to global success despite legal battles, sexism and racism. In reality, the brilliant cast is not enough to disguise the lack of cogent storytelling and emotional engagement.

With 60 vocalists who have drifted in and out of one of America's earliest rhythm and soul groups, the focus on The Drifters has rarely been about individual singers. The emphasis is on the definitive doo-wop sounds that originated more than 60 years ago and helped the group land a spot among the first group of legends ever initiated into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Fellow inductees that year included The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Supremes.
