David Roby's SOMETIMES THERE'S GOD SO QUICKLY Begins at Seacoast Rep Tonight

Starting Wednesday, October 7, the Seacoast Repertory Theatre will host writer and actor David Roby as he performs his 90-minute one man show SOMETIMES THERE'S GOD SO QUICKLY, investigating the CAT ON THE HOT TIN ROOF playwright Tennessee Williams. Playing three shows tonight, October 7, 14, and 25, Roby's play will run concurrently to The Rep's production of Williams' CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF in which Roby stars as "Brick."

SOMETIMES THERE'S GOD SO QUICKLY is a 90 minute one man show in which writer and actor David Roby (playing Brick) plays 19 characters -- all of whom Roby stumbled upon during interviews he conducted in the Mississippi River Delta while researching Tennessee Williams starting in 2010 during his tenure as The Tennessee Williams Playwright-in-Residence at The University of the South.

The play serves as a dramatic unfolding as Roby discovers a hidden metaphor in Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire as the individuals he meets along the way help solidify and defend his thesis. Roby encounters Williams' cousin, Williams' final personal assistant, two very famous actresses who personally knew Williams, a former lover of Williams and Williams' former Key West exterminator -- just to name a few. Part comedy, part drama, part mystery, part journalism, SOMETIMES THERE'S GOD SO QUICKLY investigates one playwright's obsession with another playwright's obsession.

"We are really very fortunate to have David Roby portraying Brick in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF because his insight on Williams' and his body of work is invaluable. I learned more about Tennessee Williams in a 20-minute chat with David than I had in my entire life," said Artistic Director Miles Burns.

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, which features prominently in SOMETIMES THERE'S GOD SO QUICKLY, is a 1947 play written by American playwright Tennessee Williams which received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948. The play centers on Blanche as she moves to New Orleans and gets caught up in the drama of her sister and brother-in-law's crumbling relationship. The drama A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is often regarded among the finest of American plays of the 20th century, alongside LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT and DEATH OF A SALESMAN.

Tennessee Williams was an American playwright and author of many stage classics. Along with Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller he is considered among the three foremost playwrights in 20th century American drama. In addition to Roby's three performances, the Seacoast Repertory Theatre will be performing Williams' critically acclaimed play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF is one of Williams's best-known works and his personal favorite. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955. Set in the "plantation home in the Mississippi Delta" of Big Daddy Pollitt, a wealthy cotton tycoon, the play examines the relationships among members of Big Daddy's family, primarily between his son Brick and Maggie the "Cat", Brick's wife.

SOMETIMES THERE'S GOD SO QUICKLY runs for three performances on October 7, 14, and 25 at 7pm. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof runs from October 2-25 with performances Friday-Sunday at 8PM with a 2PM matinee on Sunday and preview performances Thursdays at 7:30.
