Asolo Rep Presents LAS MENINAS Runs Thru May 15

Asolo Repertory Theatre is thrilled to introduce Florida audiences to Las Meninas, by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage. The play is directed by Asolo Rep Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards, who directed the World Premiere of Las Meninas at San Jose Rep in 2002. The Asolo Rep production of Las Meninas runs from March 18-May 15, 2011 in Asolo Rep's Mertz Theatre; then will travel to Miami to perform as part of the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) soft opening. The SMDCAC performance is hoped to foster a further artistic exchange between the two cities and the two organizations, and lead to more projects. "We are mounting only the second professional production of this important and largely unknown great American play, by a playwright who over the course of the last decade has become one of the most celebrated living American theatre artists. It was, quite simply, an incredibly powerful opportunity to engage with this work once again, and to present it to our audiences. I think people will be surprised at how enjoyable the play is...how touching, how humorous, and how easy it is to relate to the human beings in the world of this play. They'll find that they actually understand them and are touched by them. Las Meninas roughly translates as "the waiting women" or "ladies in waiting." The title's import lies in the fact that Louise, Nabo, and even Queen Marie-Thérèse have been waiting. Waiting for their stories to be told. And ideally their stories will resonate out into the larger world. We are also thrilled to be able to take this production to Miami and share it with even more people through this new SMDCAC collaboration," explains Michael Donald Edwards.

Set in the glittering court of King Louis XIV, the play is based on the little known true story of Queen Marie-Thérèse and the consequences of her scandalous relationship with Nabo Sensugali, her African servant. Was the mysterious Black Nun of Moret really the illegitimate daughter of Queen Marie-Thérèse, wife of Louis XIV? Was she hidden away in a convent to cover up the queen's illicit love affair with Nabo? Las Meninas offers a dramatic and humorous view as it unravels this historical mystery.

Michael Donald Edwards is in his fifth season as Producing Artistic Director of Asolo Rep. He was previously the Associate Artistic Director for Syracuse Stage and served as Artistic Director of Shakespeare Santa Cruz. A Garland Award and Drama Logue Award winning director, Mr. Edwards has directed at Indiana Repertory Theatre, Geva Theatre, Syracuse Stage, The Shakespeare Theatre, San Jose Rep, Opera San Jose, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Old Globe in San Diego, Virginia Stage Company, the Virginia Opera, the State Theatre of South Australia, Opera Australia, Victoria State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. More about the play:

Las Meninas is based on the true story of the illicit romance between Queen Marie-Therese (wife of Louis XIV) and her African servant, Nabo, a dwarf from Dahomey, and the hilarious consequences that scandalized the French court.

Lynn Nottage was inspired to write the play after reading an essay about the African presence in royal families, particularly a nearly forgotten mention of an illicit romance between an African dwarf and the Queen Marie Thérèse of France. After several years of research, Nottage penned the play.

The play takes its title from Diego Velázquez' masterpiece, ‘Las Meninas,' painted in 1656, which depicts the Spanish royal family, with the Infanta attended by her ladies-in-waiting (the meninas) and by her pet dwarves.

Las Meninas had its World Premiere at San Jose Repertory Theatre in 2002, where it was directed by Michael Donald Edwards. The Asolo Rep production is his second time directing the play.

Jim Hoskins THIRTIETH SEASON (Movement Specialist) Mr. Hoskins has performed, directed and choreographed in education theatre, television, film, the corporate theatre, opera, nightclubs and the legitimate theatre. He has staged more than 400 productions in this country and abroad. Over the past 40 years Mr. Hoskins has taught period movement and dance, and was the movement specialist for both the graduate and undergraduate programs at Penn State University and the graduate program at the FSU/Asolo Conservatory. He resides in Sarasota, where he is an adjunct professor of theatre at the FSU/Asolo Conservatory and staff choreographer for Asolo Rep. Mr. Hoskins' book, The Dances of Shakespeare, is published by Routledge, New York/London.

B. MODERN FIRST SEASON (Costume Designer) is delighted to make her Asolo Rep design debut. She is an Associate Artist, having designed over 35 productions at at Shakespeare Santa Cruz and also serves as an Associate Artist, having designed over 20 productions at Geva Theatre Center, New York. Doug has spent seasons at Baltimore's Center Stage, The Cleveland Play House, Milwaukee Rep, California Shakespearean Festival, Stage West, Cincinnati Playhouse, Boston's Huntington Theatre, American Stage, The Playmakers, The Straz Center, Florida Studio Theatre and four plays Off-Broadway. Doug trained at The Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London.

Will Little THIRD YEAR STUDENT, FIRST SEASON (Nabo Sensugali, Las Meninas) Originally from College Park, Georgia, Will received his BFA from Howard University in Washington, DC. His most recent work includes: La Bête, Twelve Angry Men and Antigone Now with Asolo Rep, Clay in Dutchman and Christopher in Blue/Orange on the Cook stage, Bernie in Deadly Closure (Indie Film), Dr. Posner in Wit and Grumio in Taming of the Shrew at The Players Theatre. He thanks God for giving him his talent and strength, and thanks his family and true friends for always being there. Special thanks go to the Caballeros, Sarita, Missy, Kala, Charles, Zhaniya, Dhakeria and the dogs for keeping him on his "A" game. IDID!

Barbara Redmond* ASSOCIATE ARTIST RETURNING (Queen Mother/Superior, Las Meninas) Thirty years ago, Barbara played the young Anne of Austria in The Three Musketeers at the Historic Asolo Theatre. Today she plays the ageing Anne of Austria in Las Meninas at the Mertz Theatre. Along the way, she has traveled the nation developing her work as actress, director, playwright and teacher. She currently serves as Head of Acting at the FSU/Asolo Conservatory.

ANGELA SAUER THIRD YEAR STUDENT, FIRST SEASON (Lady/Attendant, Las Meninas) Other Asolo Rep credits include: Antigone Now (Chorus), The Edge of Peace workshop (Girl), The Winter's Tale (Paulina u/s), The Imaginary Invalid (Beline u/s). Conservatory: The Mystery Plays (Amanda/Lucy), Machinal (Nurse/Matron). Angela received the2006 Excellence in Theatre Award at Saint Mary's College, as well as two KC/ACTF Irene Ryan Award nominations. She writes the blog "Angela Learns to Act" and is an online columnist for BackStage. She thanks her supportive family, and her lovely sponsors, Charles and Miriam Wood.

Lindsay Marie Tierce THIRD YEAR STUDENT, FIRST SEASON (Queen Marie Therese, Las Meninas). Other Asolo Rep credits this season: Chorus Leader, Antigone Now. Last season with the Conservatory: Patty/Grace in Mystery Plays and Mother/Woman in Bar in Machinal. Lindsay has her BA in Theatre from Cal State Northridge where she appeared as Penny in You Can't Take it With You and in Ron Popenhagen's production of The Imaginary Invalid. Jud Williford* GUEST ARTIST, SECOND SEASON (King Louis XIV, Las Meninas) Other Asolo Rep credits include: Prince Conte in La Bête, Juror #8 in Twelve Angry Men, and Larry in Managing Maxine. As a core company member at the American Conservatory Theater (San Francisco) Jud appeared in several shows. Highlights include: Scapin with Bill Irwin, The Imaginary Invalid, Curse of the Starving Class, Happy End, The Government Inspector and War Music. Other regional credits include shows at The California Shakespeare Theater including Macbeth, (Macbeth) San Jose Rep, Peoples Light Theater Chautauqua Theater, Aurora Theater and Z Space. Film credits: Rite Time Wrong Spot with Olympia Dukakis, The Tripper (dir. David Arquette), Two from the Line (dir. Rowan Brooks) and Saturn the Musical starring opposite Jeffrey Alexander Galfer.
