Akshayambara - Trailer from Dramanon Theatre on Vimeo.

Jagriti presents the first Malayalam play, Akshayambara, August 28. Performed with English subtitles. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the trailer below!

What happens when a woman enters the professional space of a form performed by men for the last 800 years? The play explores the representation of the feminine within the male-dominated practice of Yakshagana. What happens to the interpretation of gender when a man plays the streevesha and the purusha vesha is played by a woman? Who is the real woman and who is the real man?

The play was developed through the INLAKS Scholarship '14, supported by the India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) and premiered at the Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival '15. The play won the best original script and best actor (male) at the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) '16.

Over three decades after they first stepped on stage, Arundhati and Jagdish Raja have realised their dream of a centre for the performing arts with support events for the visual arts - JAGRITI.

JAGRITI means Awakening in Sanskrit. A unique 200-seat theatre space in Whitefield, Bangalore, it offers a full-thrust stage, and is fully equipped from the performer's point of view. Sensitive to the audience, there will be a dazzling variety across Theatre, Music and Dance, locally, nationally and globally.

The theatre also has a community centre for patrons to get involved in special workshops and lectures & as ushers for shows and even as a host for visiting companies. JAGRITI is an initiative of The ART Foundation, a registered charitable trust.
