Next to Normal is a show with deep roots in the mental health arena. Its plot revolves around a middle aged woman with bipolar disorder and deals with how it affects her and her family, which includes her husband, son, and daughter. Her psychiatrist also plays an integral part in the musical.

In addition to having won the 2009 Tony for Best Score, Next to Normal is also a 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama recipient.
?We at Acting Out Productions are using the show as a catalyst for conversation to end the stigma around mental illness. We will have resources on hand at each performance for anyone looking to practice self-care, or anyone who might need help in caring for someone they love. Mental illness is common, and with the right resources, it is manageable. We want to be able to share those resources and impact the community, says Director Liza Altenburg
