Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has taken on the task of breathing new life into an old idea by writing the book for a re-imagined version of a 1966 musical based on the adventures of Superman.

Comicbookresources.com is reporting that the man of steel will return to the stage this summer with the newly revitalized IT'S A BIRD...IT'S A PLANE...IT'S SUPERMAN, which is set to open at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre in Dallas, Texas on June 18th. The production will run through July 25th.

Comicbookresources.com states that one of the original flaws with the 1966 musical was that the original Superman comic books were not the main focus of the book and therefore did not incorporate any classic Superman story lines. Aguirre-Sacasa hopes to infuse the revamped musical with some of Superman's original flare, and told the website that "I heard this musical when I was ten or eleven, and I loved the idea that there was a Superman musical, but it baffled me that there were no characters from the Superman mythos. There were fun songs but no Lex Luthor, no Jimmy Olsen, no super-villains - basically nothing that you would expect from a Superman musical. I mean, there was Lois Lane and Clark Kent, but that's it."

Aguirre-Sacasa tells Comicbookresources.com that "all my comic work is for Marvel since I'm exclusive with them, but I now understand why people say that there's no better comic book character to write for than Superman."

America's greatest superhero was also the star of one of Broadway's lost musical treasures. Now this mid-'60s miracle, with great songs by the legendary Charles Strouse (Annie) and Lee Adams (Bye Bye Birdie) is part of the Wyly Theatre's historic first season. In this major "revisal," the comic book-based musical has a hip new script by the ingenious young playwright and comic book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. There will be nothing mild-mannered about this high-voltage revival, when Superman flies in to help Clark Kent and Lois Lane face off against a team of super villains.

With singing, dancing, colorful sets and costumes, and a tuneful Broadway score, Superman will be an uplifting end to DTC's 51st season.
