Jazz great Uri Caine will perform in a free concert at Swarthmore College on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. in the Lang Music Building, Concert Hall.

Caine, known for his piano improvisations that transmute classical works into swinging jazz, will appear with inventive vocalist Theo Bleckmann in a program including new jazz works and improvisations on pieces by classical composers including Mozart and Mahler.

Uri Caine grasps the classics-Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Wagner, Mahler, Gershwin, Verdi-and shakes them up, challenging us to hear something unexpected in and around this familiar music. His performances-whether solo at the keyboard or with an ensemble, whether reimagining classical works or expanding on his own compositions-are audacious, exuberant, subtle, and intelligent. During his residency at Swarthmore, Caine will demonstrate his characteristic approach, at once deeply knowledgeable and vibrantly irreverent.

The public is invited, and music students are particularly welcome.
