The holiday season seems to have started early as Billy Stritch & Jim Caruso started another segment of their Carlyle residency Sunday evening, and for the folks in Bemelmans Bar it seemed like the unofficial start of the holiday season. The performance recipe are the duo's well honed talents and incomparable musical entertainment abilities that have long been a New York City institution of sorts.
I guess when you're accomplishments have reached a certain level you start to get things named after you. Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation in Texas recently honored Billy by naming The Billy Stritch Stage at the Sugar Land Auditorium. I'm not sure if they have named anything for Jim yet, (although I'm sure he probably has a few humorous suggestions). Every time I'm on 44th street and look up at that huge picture of him on the wall of the Birdland building I begin thinking the parking lot was honoring him.
If you're an experienced and entertainment savvy patron you kind of know where the music and the performance is going. With Billy & Jim the music and the informal patter always take a uniquely exciting and unexpected turn. They will be celebrating at the Carlyle in November & December and the party is open to the public.
