Leonardo DiCaprio Signs On For New Quentin Tarantino Film on Charles Manson

According to Mashable, Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in the new Quentin Tarantino film. The story is based on Charles Manson's cult and the subsequent murders they performed in the 1960s. Read more from Mashable here.

The film is set to release on August 9, 2019. This is Tarantino's ninth film. DiCaprio has previously starring in Tarantino's 2012 hit DJANGO UNCHAINED. Sony picked up the movie late 2017.

Sony has won the battle amongst movie distributors to claim Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film about the Manson Family murders as their own, as reported by Deadline. Sony won over Paramount and Warner Brothers to get this hot commodity.

Sony's ability to market films and appeal to an international market is said to be what led to the decision.

Tarantino's film is set to have a budget of $100 million and Tarantino himself is requesting first dollar gross, which means he gets a cut of the Sony's pre-tax revenue. The filmmaker is also set to receive a final cut. These pricey demands scared off some studios, while others were scared by the dark subject matter.

Tarantino's last film THE HATEFUL EIGHT was a flop at the box office, earning $155.8 million globally, compared to his other films, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS and DJANGO UNCHAINED which earned $321.5 million and $425.4 million respectively. The later two were also award season favorite, while THE HATEFUL EIGHT went under the radar, only earning 1 Oscar win for Best Score.

Another conflict of interest with Tarantino is that he did most of his work through now defunct producer Harvey Weinstein's company. Tarantino now must find a new company to do business, as to not mix himself up with the sexual assault and abuse scandals of Weinstein.
