A live recording of John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles, as performed by LA Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in 2015, has been released as part of PENTATONE's newly launched American Opera Series. The audio was captured by Boston-based production company SoundMirror. The new recording is available as a two-CD (SACD) album and as a digital download through numerous platforms including Amazon, iTunes and Spotify.

"The artists of LA Opera's 2015 production made as compelling a case for The Ghosts of Versailles as I heard on its first night at the Metropolitan Opera in 1991," noted Mr. Corigliano. "To have that performance preserved in a recording of this quality is, for this composer, a dream come true."

LA Opera is deeply appreciative of major underwriting support from the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, which made possible both the company's 2015 production of The Ghosts of Versailles and this new audio recording.

LA Opera's presentation of The Ghosts of Versailles marked the west coast premiere of the opera, and was its first full-scale production in the United States since 1995. The opera incorporates the characters and major plot lines of The Guilty Mother, the little known third chapter in French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais' "Figaro" trilogy. (The first two plays in the trilogy-The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro-are best known today through their respective operatic adaptions by Rossini and Mozart.) Librettist William M. Hoffman also incorporated the historical figures King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and Beaumarchais himself into the opera's plot.

The cast is led by soprano Patricia Racette as Marie Antoinette, baritone Christopher Maltman as Beaumarchais and baritone Lucas Meachem as Figaro, with Broadway legend Patti LuPone as the Egyptian entertainer Samira. James Conlon conducts the LA Opera Orchestra and Chorus.
