The Late Jenni Rivera Tops Winners at 2013 BILLBOARD MEXICAN MUSIC AWARDS

The biggest stars of Mexican music converged at the 2013 Billboard Mexican Music Awards with mesmerizing performances and a festive tribute to Mexican music. The event honored the albums, songs, most popular singers, labels and publishers of Mexican music according to Billboard chart performance. Top honors at the prestigious music event went to the late Jenni Rivera, garnering posthumously seven Billboard Mexican Music Awards. The celebration took place at the renowned Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California and was broadcast live on Telemundo. Strong music sales and airplay following her untimely death, earned the works by the late Jenni Rivera seven Billboard Mexican Music Awards in multiple categories including the coveted Artist of the Year; Artist of the Year, Female; Albums Artist of the Year; Digital Download Artist of the Year; and Banda Artist of the Year. Jenni Rivera's album "La Misma Gran Señora" won Album of the Year and Banda Album of the Year.

Gerardo Ortiz, winner of the most Billboard Mexican Music Awards in the history of the event added four awards this year to his total of seventeen. The new king of Corridos and a phenomenon in this music genre won for Artist of the Year, Male; Songs Artist of the Year, and Norteño Artist of the Year; while his album "El Primer Ministro" earned an award for Norteño Album of the Year.

La Arrolladora Banda el Limon de Rene Camacho won three awards including Artist of the Year, Duo or Group; Airplay Artist of the Year and; Banda Song of the Year for their hit song "Cabecita Dura." Joan Sebastian received two awards for Ranchero/Mariachi Artist of the Year and Ranchero/Mariachi Album of the Year for "13 Celebrando El 13." The leading Mexican music singer was also the recipient of the Billboard "Voice Award," given to an artist or musical group with a distinctive and unique on and off-stage persona. Voz de Mando's song "Y Ahora Resulta" earned two awards including Song of the Year and Norteño Song of the Year.

Recipients of one Billboard Mexican Music Award include: 3BallMTY for Duranguense/Grupero/Cumbia Artist of the Year; Calibre 50 and Banda Carnaval won Song of the Year, Vocal Event for their collaboration "Gente Batallosa"; the song "Nube Blanca" by El Trono de Mexico was awarded Duranguense/Grupero/Cumbia Song of the Year; while the album "Iconos: 25 Años" by Los Bukis earned Duranguense/Grupero/Cumbia Album of the Year; additionally, Roberto Junior y Su Bandeño was named Artist of the Year, New. Isidro Chavez "Espinoza Paz" Espinoza earned Songwriter of the Year and Fernando Camacho Tirado won Producer of the Year. Finalists and winners of the Billboard Mexican Music Awards were determined by chart performance as chronicled in Billboard Magazine and on billboard.com during the eligibility period of August 18, 2012 through August 10, 2013. Award categories are based on album and digital track sales data provided by Nielsen SoundScan and radio airplay monitored by Nielsen BDS.

In addition to Billboard's "The Voice" award, two other special awards were handed out during the 2013 Billboard Mexican Music Awards to leading singers and musical acts that have made an impact on Mexican music and society over the span of their careers. The most influential regional Mexican group Los Tigres del Norte received the first ever Billboard "Leaders Award" in recognition of their leadership role and their social activism. Legendary musical group Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizarraga was presented with Billboard's "Musical Legacy Award," in recognition of a lengthy and rich musical trajectory that has influenced the genre and its artists.

The event included exciting and entertaining performances by: Gerardo Ortiz, Roberto Tapia, Calibre 50, Roberto Junior y su Bandeño, Kevin Ortíz, Los inquietos del Norte, Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga, Banda Los Recoditos, Julion Alvarez y su Norteño Banda, Joan Sebastian, Los Primos MX, Los Tigres del Norte, Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández, Diana Reyes, El Chapo de Sinaloa, La Adictiva Banda San José de Mesillas, Los Elegantes de la Banda, and AB Quintanilla III.
