Recent changes in seafood production and tastes have driven lobster and shrimp prices to a historic situation where shrimp in many cases is actually more expensive than lobster.

And when the public is hungry for answers, media experts turned to the best place in California for insight into the market swings, San Pedro Fish Market and Restaurant, the Golden State's largest and holder of four Guinness World Records, including three for lobster.

"The reporter from the Orange County Register found us from Google searches on lobster, saw the records we set, and gave us a call," explained Mike Ungaro, Vice-President of San Pedro Fish Market and Restaurant. "We were honored to help let people know that shrimp consumption is up because people see how great shrimp is, while unfortunately the short term price is up because of issues where shrimp naturally grow."

The featured story in the Orange County Register Business section on how shrimp prices have moved higher and higher while lobster prices have remained relatively stable featured the staff and customers of San Pedro Fish Market in interviews and color photos.

"People like shrimp and lobster a lot because as Americans become more knowledgeable about quality, freshness, preparation, and nutrition, demand continues to grow," said Ungaro. "It's unusual that lobster is a deal right now compared to shrimp, but a lot more countries are fishing for shrimp this season, so I would expect prices are going to even out shortly. In the meantime, lobster is just awesome right now and a deal."
