Curve Presents Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Oct. 18
Curve is delighted to be one of just five venues to host innovative New York-based dance company Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet as it undertakes its first British national tour.
Founded in 2003, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet has forged a strong reputation over the past decade for the exceptional calibre of its dancers and for commissioning new work from the world's most sought after choreographers. The company returns to the UK following a critically acclaimed debut at Sadler's Wells in 2012.
The programme comprises a triple bill of works including two UK premieres.
Indigo Rose, created by acclaimed Czech choreographer Ji?í Kylián, provides a virtuosic showcase for the company's talented ensemble. The work is a fast-paced and frenetic assemblage of duets, trios and quartets, spiked with moments of humour and set against a driving score which juxtaposes Baroque pieces by Bach and Couperin with 20th century American composer John Cage's prepared piano works.
Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue (UK premiere) - commissioned by Cedar Lake from Canadian choreographerCrystal Pite - displays a deeply evocative and compelling aesthetic. The piece is presented in a circle of spotlights, where pairs of dancers sweep in and out of the light playing either the rescued or the rescuer in captivating sequences.
The bill is completed by Norwegian choreographer Jo Strømgren's spirited ensemble piece, Necessity, Again, the second UK premiere of the evening and another Cedar Lake commissioned work. At once playful and subconsciously sinister, the piece is an exploration of a pure expression of emotion, without need for narrative or reason, set against a selection of songs by Charles Aznavour.
Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet has excelled with its mission to integrate ballet with contemporary and popular dance forms and is well on the way to becoming one of the world's foremost young dance companies.
