Still updating, but already interesting.

Only two broadway musical are nominating for best musical and they’re Illinoise and The Outsiders. Those are the two I’m between for the Tony also.

Wow, the only Broadway musical to get nominated for Best Musical is Illinoise. Ouch.

Edit: disregard- missed The Outsiders

I am surprised by the lack of nominations for Jeremy Strong and An Enemy of the People.

Didn’t The Outsiders get nominated too?

You're absolutely right- I missed it.

Agreed, he was a standout in that show.

11 nominations for Dead Outlaw and 8 for The Connector. Possibly a couple of transfers on the horizon?

- I initially thought it was odd that Ricamora got in for Featured performance for Oh, Mary! but Escola didn't get in for Lead, but finally saw way at the bottom that they were given a special award. (Maybe those should be at the top?)

- Rankin getting nominated and Redmayne being left out is a good call.

- The worst parts of The Connector were the book and the choreography, so nice to see that despite all the nominations elsewhere, it was not cited in those categories.

- I like the Jessica Stone nomination and still hold out hope she'll get a Tony nod, however unlikely that is.

I thought Cole Escola was snubbed but looks like they’re getting a special award for writing and performance. Well deserved!

It just doesn't seem fair to combine the acting awards they way they do now. For a total of 4 instead of 8.

Also noteworthy that they put Ubeda in Lead and Plunkett and Harewood in Featured, unlike the Tonys. These seem to make more sense IMO.

These are all over the place. More so than usual.  Tomorrow is anyone’s guess but I’m still pulling for some Wiz love.

Some of the ancillary awards are interesting in the way they categorized them, like the Outsiders choreography nom includes the fight choreography and the Gatsby set design award includes projections, so those are not included in their separate categories.  Interesting to see that they're leaning towards Outsiders when a Broadway show is nominated, though I'll admit I expected to see a few more noms for Suffs (which up til now in my view has been the main competition against Illinoise for Best Musical).

Why isn't it fair?  It takes gender out of the equation. And instead of having one winner out of 4, you now have 2 winners out of 8. Same ratio, same fairness.

I noticed in TimeOut's (fake) "TONY" nominations they cited Esper in Featured Actor in a Play instead of Stoll. Now the Drama Desk nominations have done the same. Stoll still seems more likely for the Tony nod...or maybe not?

This is how it should be done for every awards show.

Shameful but it doesn't matter. That Tony nom is still more than guaranteed.

I know the Drama Desks do whatever they want, but these placements do make more sense. Still hoping to see all three tomorrow morning.

Thrilled for (the probably little-seen) Lizard Boy for getting some big nominations in Musical, Music, and Book. I'm happy these awards get to highlight the tiny shows alongside the big ones, and for something like a very limited run at Prospect to have beaten out 12 other Broadway musicals (Here Lies Love was probably ineligible) is huge for a show like that.

"

"Shameful" is a little melodramatic. The Drama Desks are idiosyncratic and cast a much, much wider net in the productions they honor. A blockbuster revival and its celebrity star may not have gotten in, but a host of much smaller, less widely seen, and less heralded artists did instead.

Esper is the better actor in that play so it makes sense.

Corey Stoll is a great actor, but IMO he has one of the least interesting role in Appropriate. Esper has much more of an awards-bait kind of part I think.

Suffs was ineligible this year, I'm assuming? And was Lempicka was totally shut out? Yikes.

EDIT: Suffs' Off-Braodway run was not considered last season, and it looks like it did get a few nominations...double yikes. Then again, the Drama Desk nominating committee is like seven people, right?

Michael R. Jackson issued a correction on Twitter, pointing out he should not be the sole nominee for Outstanding Book for Teeth and should share the nomination with Anna K. Jacobs.
