So, the cast recording for ON YOUR FEET came out today and I must say...I'm not impressed at all.
As someone who wasn't a huge fan of the show, I figured that the Estefan's fantastic music being preserved as a cast recording would prove to be redemptive, but I'm finding based on a few of the songs that I've heard that they kept a lot of the inane dialogue peppered through the big numbers (especially "Conga" and that the live aspect of the recording makes a lot of the actors either drowned out by the band or the audience, making it a very uneasy listen in terms of a cast recording. The only song that seems to fare well is "Coming Out Of The Dark".

I like when cast albums include lots of dialogue and with this being recorded live I bet it would have probably been difficult to cut some of that dialogue out without it being an obvious edit. I'm enjoying the novelty of a live Broadway cast recording but I will agree that the sound quality is lacking in places. The recent Miss Saigon revival cast album is an example of how to make a live recording sound near studio quality. However they did that everyone should be striving for that quality with live albums. The recent Kinky Boots London album was a mess and I think On Your Feet fairs a bit better in the way they edited it and the quality of the sound but it's not on the same level as Miss Saigon's live album quality.
I don't know if I just got more used to it as it went on, or if the mix got better the further in the album. I'm working my way through and "Wrapped" isn't bothering me nearly as much as the dialogue in "Rhythm is Gonna Get You"
The album is on Apple Music for anyone interested!
I loved it! I actually enjoyed it much more with the dialogue than I would have without it. It actually played like a Broadway Cast Album as opposed to just a bunch of famous songs re-recorded (i.e. BEAUTIFUL).

I will admit... I'm jamming to the Mega Mix right now. Especially as many of the songs are presented in a performance context, having an audience reaction is nice. The people cheering along during the Mega Mix are a nice touch.
I'm a little disappointed in the sound quality of the recording, but I do love it. I like that they left some of the dialogue in (although I wish they would've left the "Mi Tierra" scene alone because the shift in the song seems odd without it).

You took the words right out of my mouth. I could not agree more.
I downloaded it today. I liked it a lot, but I do agree with others the sound quality particularly during some of the dialogue left a lot to be desired. Nonetheless, I did enjoy listening to it. Thinking of going back and seeing it again.
This will definitely tour successfully. Hopefully Ana Villafañe does a few stops in the tour. She's something to witness. It's obvious the tour will premiere in Miami and most likely she'll open the tour like most lead actors have been doing for some time now.
Revisited the recording yesterday and today to hopefully let my initial reaction simmer down, but the live recording is not any good, I loved the show and was hoping for this to be a good memory down the road, but the voices are so distant and echo-y that it's hard to even hear/understand what the cast is singing, I really wanted to like it
As others said, the Miss Saigon Live recording is one of the best recordings I've ever heard of any show, so I had my hopes up I suppose.
There are some sound quality issues with the dialogue, for sure, but I like that about it. It highlights the live element of the album and it makes it stand out from most cast albums, which are recorded in a studio. But really, who can think about the dialogue with Villafañe's impressive vocal performance? I hadn't heard her sing the role or seen any clips and was shocked by how she manages to sound exactly like Gloria Estefan in a way that doesn't feel forced or gimmicky. What a terrific performance. As with most jukebox musicals, I wish some of the songs played longer and with less disruptions, and the dialogue (particularly Emilio Estefan's) is corny and silly, but Villafañe makes one forget about all this--and any time Andrea Burns is in an album/show is a reason to rejoice.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Just listened and while the music itself seems well-amplified and recorded, the vocals and the dialogue sounds little better than a bootleg recording. I hate the audience fade outs into the next track. While I understand the reason why they wanted to capture the energy of a life recording, I think this was a massive miss. And without the eye candy of Josh and his impressive white shorts, his dialogue is just lost to my ear.
Sadly, this recording is a colossal fail as the dialogue interruptions don't help plus the audio quality is just terrible. I only play the fantastic "Tradicion" track.
I feel that this wasn't professionally recorded with proper microphone capture but they just simply released a recording off the theatre soundboard. The audio seems to be audio picked up from the actor's head mics. This is evident when dialogue fades when actors walk away from other actors as they speak.
I hope they recall this recording and redo it correctly. I've spoken to a few cast members who also hate how badly produced this recording turned out.

I doubt they'll recall it, but wow I didn't know the cast also realized it turned out badly.
Presumably the cast listened to it during and post production? Unbelievable that producers would permit such a poor recording to be released considering the show deals with the recording industry.
