A glorified theme park show and a jukebox musical with the dramatic intensity of a Love Boat episode are going to outrun one of the best shows on Broadway. Yep, that sounds like the Broadway of today.

Sad to hear the news, though I think we all saw it coming. It had a nice run.

Unrelated, but when I saw the BWW headline, I thought it had something to do with the Maury Yeston musical "Death Takes A Holiday" haha

I don't mean to change the subject here, but yes. A big, magical stage musical from Disney and an inspirational biomusical are going to outrun what some people find to be a very overrated show.

I admired the show more than I loved it, but I'm really sorry that it's closing before "a big, magical Disney stage musical and an inspirational biomusical." (BTW, what does "inspirational" mean? Isn't it just annoyingly cliched buzzword by now?)

Looking forward to the next show from these authors. They're fine craftsmen.

what does "inspirational" mean?

What I meant was that what fans of Beautiful have taken away from that show is such an inspirational story about Carole King's rise to fame. And I am so sick by the pans the show received on these boards.

You mean the people who paid money to see it and left with a different opinion than you? Yeah, I hate when those people exist, too.

Tuck Everlasting is going into the Broadhurst and American Psycho is going into a Shubert house.

Jose

I was wondering why , if you found it boring the first time, you paid for a ticket to see it again? Just curious.

It is a rather sad commentary on Broadway when an original show is not as successful or more than a theme park show & a jukebox show. Both are well done shows but it basically shows where broadways head is at. Add to that the SpongeBob musical. That really says it all.

Saw Gentlemen's Guide & thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yeah, Jeffrey I understand it's no fun to watch a show you love being ripped apart on a message board, but that's part of the deal here. Not everyone agrees, and in some cases, you are part of the minority opinion.

I think it's pretty likely that one of our "confirmed but no theatre announced" shows will go into it. The Crucible or Hughie? If I remember correctly, bother shows have confirmed Broadway runs but haven't announced a theatre. It seems likely to me that they were holding off on announcing their theatre until GG's closure became public.

Bravo to a run of over two years to a pretty original new musical.

In a way, yes. Mainly because I just really don't like seeing people on these boards trashing on hits like The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Wicked, Kinky Boots, etc.

It was kind of funny that South FI Marc called Aladdin 'a glorified theme park show' because that was the exact criticism Beauty & the Beast received when it first opened on Broadway.

Even though it was suppose to be an adaptation of the film Kind Hearts & Coronets, but the authors couldn't get the rights to it, so they went back to the film's source material and decided to do an adaptation of that instead.

The Crucible is going into the Lyceum right after A View from The Bridge.

We're all so negative! How about we applaud the fact that a new, original musical had this long of a run on Broadway, and made some money doing so. And I'm sure it's going to have a solid life in the regional theatre world.

I dunno--I think this would have been a healthy run for a show like Gentlemen's in any era of Broadway.  It will have outrun shows I might consider vaguely similar like Papp's Pirates of Penzance, the original (ultimately flop) production of Little Me, Edwin Drood, etc...  It's in fine company.

With a View From the Bridge closing 8 days before The Crucible starts previews? I find that unlikely. Maybe I'm ignorant of the efficiency of Broadway, but I don't see how they can load out, load in, AND have enough time for tech rehearsals in such a short period.
