It's been years since the show played the Roundabout Underground, but it still just sticks in my memory as such a gem. Sarah Steele was perfection. I wasn't really in the theatrical loop in 2008 - did other people feel the same way?
Funny, I was actually rereading this play the other night, and I forgot how strong it is. I wish I had been able to see the Roundabout production, but unfortunately I didn't really discover the show until after it had closed.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Sons of the Prophet IS a better play, but they are both wonderful. Speech and Debate is such a cinch to produce, too. It's having a great life on the collegiate circuit. The entire cast was fantastic, and I know I keep harping, but oh, my goodness, Sarah Steele.
I don't know SPEECH AND DEBATE, but I was riveted and moved and entertained and surprised and impressed and etc etc etc etc by SONS OF THE PROPHET. It is a brilliant piece. Karam seems to be an incredibly astute writer with an ear for dialogue, but managing to say a lot of important things using regular people. I should order SPEECH AND DEBATE and read it. SONS OF THE PROPHET was also the play that solidified in my mind that Santino Fontana is one of our great young stage actors. I hope he has a massive career very soon.... I'm happy he's nominated for a Tony, but I think it's really bizarre and kind of hilarious that it is for playing Prince Charming, after all the wonderful work he has done. Good for him though, save some money so he can do more great plays Off-Broadway that may not pay as well.
