Maxwell started his company in order to help retain employment for blind musicians and performers, studio engineers, and actors.
Last night, December 6, Award-winning actors Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City, Rabbit Hole) and John Slattery (Mad Men, Rabbit Hole) starred in a one-night only play reading of the quirky comedy, Hate Mail, to benefit Opening Act, an innovative nonprofit that provides free after-school theater programs to New York City's most under-served public high schools. Once a year, Celebrity Make Up Artist Rob Harmon and friends hold a cabaret-style benefit to raise money for Trinity Place, a shelter for GLBTQ Youth. Trinity is an amazing grassroots organization that provides shelter to New York's GLBTQ teenage community who have been displaced from their homes and families. Over the past several years this humble "Cabaret" show has become so successful that it has produced more than half the church's annual budget. The event on Sunday night featured appearances by Shoshana Bean (Wicked), Joey Taranto (Rock of Ages), Carrie Manolakos (Wicked), Donna Vivino (Wicked), Scott Alan, Neil Davis, Breedlove, SIRPAUL, Joe Hubrich (Housewives of Beverly Hills), Felicia Ricci (Wicked), Libby Servais (Wicked) and was hosted by Bianca Del Rio Sunday night's event raised more than $12,000 for the shelter. Lea DeLaria hosted the evening with feature performances from Ricky Ian Gordon, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, Marc Kudisch, Aaron Lazar, Erin Quill, Seth Rudetsky, John Tartaglia, Jeanine Tesori, and Tony Yazbeck, as well as Emily Albrink, Jeff Blumenkrantz, Attila Joey Csiki of Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Constantine Germanacos, Joe Lodato, Matthew Morris, Todd Palmer, Kate Pazakis, Kathleen Tagg, and Nurit Tilles. Michael Rader directed the concert with stage management from David M. Beris.
Brendan Fraser and Denis O'Hare star in ELLING on Broadway with Jennifer Coolidge in ELLING, new comedy from London, directed by Tony Award-winner Doug Hughes. ELLING began performances Tuesday, November 2, opened Sunday, November 21 on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre 243 West 47th Street and will play a strictly limited engagement through March 20, 2011. Universal Pictures Stage Productions, Working Title Films and Old Vic Productions celebrated the opening of the 2009 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Billy Elliot the Musical at the Durham Performing Arts Center. The show, currently playing through November 14, 2010, celebrated their opening week with a kickoff party at Pops, a local Durham restaurant, on Sunday evening. Joining the company were director Stephen Daldry, writer and lyricist Lee Hall, American Idol-runner up Clay Aiken along with other producers and show management.
Rolex presented Career Transition For Dancers' 25th ANNIVERSARY SILVER JUBILEE: A STAR-STUDDED RETROSPECTIVE at New York City Center, last night, November 8. The evening highlighted magical moments from past glittering galas. Artists from some of America's greatest dance companies performed: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; American Ballet Theatre; The Joffrey Ballet; MOMIX; National Dance Institute; and Parsons Dance. Also appearing are Tony Award Winners: Marvin Hamlisch (who wrote a song to premiere at the show), Bebe Neuwirth, Ann Reinking, Chita Rivera, Karen Ziemba with Charlotte d'Amboise, Desmond Richardson and Edward Villella. The entertainment/dance event of the new season had show-stopping Broadway numbers from '42nd Street' and 'Chicago.' The 2010 Rolex Dance Award was presented to Twyla Tharp. The Career Transition For Dancers' Awards for Outstanding Contributions to the World of Dance was presented to the organization's four union founders: Actors' Equity Association, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, American Guild of Musical Artists, Screen Actors Guild; as well as an award each to The Barth Family and to the CTFD President Cynthia G. Last night, November 8, The New 42nd Street Gala honored Tony Award winning actor Bill Irwin. The annual event, which this year celebrates The New Victory Theater Education Program, featured guests Nathan Lane, Jonathan Demme, new vaudeville troupe The Handsome Little Devils and Full Circle Productions (under the direction of Gabriel 'Kwikstep' Dionisio and Ana 'Rokafella' Garcia), Kevin Kline, Phoebe Cates Kline and more. After accepting his award, Irwin took the stage with 12 4th graders from PS/IS 111 to present a special musical vaudeville finale, the product of student workshops led by Irwin with children from The New Victory Education Residency program. Brooke Shields, the internationally-acclaimed model and film, television and Broadway star, headlined the Broadway in South Africa (BSA) charity event last night, October 28, in New York City. Shields, a constant supporter of children's causes, joined a host of Broadway and New York City artists in donating their time and talents to support BSA's efforts toward providing children, from South Africa's neediest communities, with necessary life skills through arts education. The event took place at The Box and featured an evening of songs, dance and many surprise, vaudeville-style variety acts, typical of late-night shows produced at the lower east side hotspot.
