This fall at the Rubin Museum of Art, experts from a variety of fields will tackle the difficult concept of wisdom and why it still matters in our era of information overload. Featuring on-stage conversations, as well as immersive experiences and film screenings, "The Wisdom Matrix" will bring together eclectic personalities including actor Mia Farrow, musician Rosanne Cash, humorist and ethics columnist RAndy Cohen, actor Steve Buscemi, author and NPR hostKrista Tippett, Zen poet Norman Fisher, comedienne Ilana Glazer, and many more, to explore how the head, heart, and gut each play a role in wise decision-making. The four month series will also invite visitors to personally reflect on their own definitions of wisdom through experiences like Mirror Meditation.

"True wisdom is very distinct from simple information or knowledge, so our objective this fall is to get wiser about what wisdom really is" said Tim McHenry, Director of Programs and Engagement at the Rubin, who curated the series. "As we bring together many of the world's leading thinkers on the subject, the real intrigue will come when visitors encounter their own interpretations of wisdom, reflect on the things they don't yet know, and discover how they can use reasoning, compassion, and instinct when they reach crucial turning points in their own lives."

Highlights of The Wisdom Matrix include:

  • Comedienne Ilana Glazer unpacks how intuition is used on stage and on screen with psychologist David Ludden
  • The actress and activist Mia Farrow shares some of her realizations of later life with Broadway playwright and directorJames Lapine in a freewheeling conversation about the truths gathered on life's path.
  • Meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg is invited by humorist RAndy Cohen to talk about one person, one place, and one thing that is important to her.
  • Broadcaster Krista Tippett and author Elizabeth Lesser address the nature of giving, forgiveness, and the implications of following the poet Rumi's invitation "Out beyond ideas of wrong doing and right doing there is a field. I'll meet you there."
  • "Body Wisdom" ticketholders will wander the galleries to encounter ongoing, intimate dance performances in direct dialogue with art from the Rubin Museum's collection, curated by choreographer Keely Rakushin Garfield.
  • Rosanne Cash gives an acoustic performance in response to her own definition of wisdom
  • During the U.S. film premiere of InnSaei (The Power of Intuition), gorgeous animation and stunning imagery will offer radical insights into how we think and sense the world today, including interviews with artist Marina Abramovi?, neuroscientist Mari Spiegelman, and West African elder Malidoma Patrice Somé.
