SISTAS: THE MUSICAL Airs on BET Today
The hit Off-Broadway musical, SISTAS recently celebrated its third year running at St. Luke's Theatre in the heart of Broadway. Now the play is about to celebrate yet another milestone. Today, October 27th a film version of the musical will air nationally, on BET at 1:00pm (EST), expanding the opportunity for millions who might not otherwise be able to see the stage version of this emotionally compelling story.
The musical centers around a group of sisters who come together to pick a song for their grandmother's memorial service. Gathered in her attic, going through her keepsakes, they become aware of her profound contributions to their family's history and to the community. In the process, the sisters share their individual stories of heartache and triumph, using a playlist of more than 30 popular songs made famous over a 100-year period.
Through songs like Strange Fruit, Stormy Weather, R.E.S.P.E.C.T, and more current pop culture hits like Tyrone and Single Ladies, the audience is taken on a historic and personal journey from the days of Jim Crow, through the Civil Rights and women's movements, to more contemporary and present day issues.
Written by Fulbright Scholar Dr. Dorothy Marcic, SISTAS was filmed last November,
before a live audience, at St. Paul's Community Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York and released, on DVD and digital download this past June 4th. The play continues to draw audiences who come from as far away as China, Japan and Brazil and as close to home as Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington D.C.
Catch SISTAS on your local BET channel, on Sunday, October 27th or Off Broadway at St. Luke's Theatre in New York City.
