Renowned Arts Writer to Speak at Broward Arts Exhibition

The Cultural Division and ArtServe, Inc. invite artists, arts-based business owners and creative entrepreneurs to A Conversation with Sarah Thornton, writer and sociologist of culture who has been called "the Jane Goodall of the art world" by The Washington Post. Thornton is the author of the critically-acclaimed books 33 Artists in 3 Acts and Seven Days in the Art World, which offer unprecedented insight into the inner workings of the art world and access to its most significant living artists.

The theme of Thornton's talk is "Are Artists Entrepreneurs?" She will be joined in conversation by Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. The event will be followed by a book signing.

Sarah Thornton is a former chief correspondent on contemporary art for The Economist. She has written for numerous publications including Artforum, The Guardian and The New Yorker, and has been a contributor to the BBC and NPR. Her book, Seven Days in the Art World, has been published in 17 languages and was named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times. In 33 Artists in 3 Acts, she goes behind-the-scenes with artists from global superstars to unheralded teachers to explore what defines an artist in the 21st century.

This special event is the closing forum for the 2017 DBA (Doing Business As) exhibition at ArtServe. For nine years, DBA...Doing Business as Artist Entrepreneurs exhibitions have showcased a dynamic group of South Florida's rising artists. All graduates of the Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute, DBA artists have put principles learned in the workshop into practice to create their own vehicle for artistic success. This year's exhibition is titled "Chrysalis: A Time of Change." It opens June 8th and is co-curated by Phoenix and Bunny Sheffield.
