Bernice Lee's Rachel, a musical based on the life and times of President Andrew Jackson's wife, will open on Thursday, December 1, 2005 at Wings Theatre (154 Christopher St). A preview performance will be presented on Wednesday, November 30th.

"Rachel illuminates the tragic effects on the life of Rachel, a spirited
frontier wife, falsely branded a bigamist, adultress and lying cheat.  Andrew Jackson's best attempts to shield his beloved Rachel from the barrage of false attacks ultimately failed," state press notes.

Featured in the cast of Rachel are Kay Arnold, James Bormann, Karen Dillie, John Kelly, Susan Jerome, Geany Masai, Leslie Shreve and Mark Silberberg.  The show's musical director is Richard Sterne; Rachel features music by Lou Greene, set and lighting design by Nadine Charlson, and costumes by Tom Claypool.

Director Scott Pegg spent the last 6 years working for Met Opera Guild's series Growing Up with Opera. He wrote and directed Operation Opera, Opera, Under Construction, and Oh Say You Can Sing, among others. He directed the world premiere of Hoover Sucks at N.Y. International Fringe Festival & Home Front Theatre and the world premiere of Nellie by Bernice Lee and Jaz Dorsey at the Greenwich Street Theatre. He has also directed for Bronx Opera Co., and Boston's Studio Works.

Bernice Lee's plays produced Off and Off-Off B'Way and regionally. She wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics for the musical Nellie based on the life and times of reporter Nellie Bly. She started her directing career on the staff of Michael Shurtleff's Theatre in N.Y. She is Founding/Artistic Director of Works By Women, presenting women playwrights and directors from across the U.S, Europe, Latin America and New Zealand since 1981.
 
 Performances of Rachel are Dec 1, 2, 3 at 8 p.m.; Sun Dec 4th at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri. Dec. 5,7,8,9 at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec 10 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
