Serenbe Playhouse presents a world premiere adaptation of THE SECRET GARDEN by Rachel Teagle, based on the original book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. BroadwayWorld has a sneak peek at the cast below!

Spring's essence is one of metamorphosis: winter's barren branches take bloom; animals emerge from their hiding holes; and slowly but surely the general populous makes its way back into the world. Perhaps no classic tale so perfectly encapsulates this season of transfiguration than Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, a story which follows the coming of age of the recently orphaned Mary Lennox as she finds herself and her new life in the endless estate of her estranged Uncle's untamed gardens.

Carrying on their season's tradition of transformation, Serenbe Playhouse is breathing new life into the story with their debut of Playwright Rachel Teagle's interpretation of the tale. "As a kid, I read Frances Hodgson Burnett's story until the book fell apart in my hands. I spent a lot of time looking for secret doors under the ivy in the backyard," Rachel says. "Mary's journey out of bitter isolation into belonging really resonates; no matter how old we are, there's still a lonely lost child inside us somewhere. Above all, this story offers hope - that people can change, that love can bloom, and that spring will come again."

The production will mark the debut of an English Garden sewn specifically to immerse the performers and their audience completely within the world of Archibald Craven's decaying estate in Yorkshire. Hidden in the lush woods of Serenbe, this garden will be a permanent fixture in the community. Undoubtedly all will be lost within the world of a girl left aimless in a foreign world without the guiding voices of her parents, and only her headstrong nature and loyalty to help her along the way.

"There is something truly beautiful about a world where nature can heal and change one's heart - it is the perfect fit for Serenbe," Artistic Associate and Director Ryan Oliveti says. "I could not be more excited and honored to bring this tale to a whole new generation, and help them discover the magic of transformation."

The production will feature a true ensemble of six extremely talented performers: Shelby Folks as Mary Lennox, David-Aaron Roth as Colin, Terrence Smith as Dickon, Cherise James as Robin, Shannon McCarren as Martha and Playhouse favorite Justin Walker as Ben Weatherstaff.

Led by director Ryan Oliveti, the creative team includes Erik Teague as costume designer and Bobby Johnston as sound designer. The brand new, permanent garden will be designed by Cameron Watkins of C. Watkins Garden Co.

Show dates and times for The Secret Garden are May 29th - August 2nd on Fridays & Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.; Tickets are $15 for Students, $20 for Adults and $10 for children under 12.
