CBS reports that Times Square's iconic billboards might be headed for the chopping block.

Due to a 2012 law that recognizes the major crossroads as a connection to the national highway system, Times Square falls under the 1965 Highway Beautification Act. The law limits signs to 1,200 square feet (35 x 35), which includes many of the Great White Way's advertisements.

New York City will lose around $90 million in federal highway funds if it doesn't comply.

City Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg told CBS, "The signs in Times Square are wonderful. They're iconic. They're not only a global tourist attraction, they're important to the economy. We're not going to be taking down the billboards in Times Square. We're going to work with the federal government and the state and find a solution."

The city is considering asking for an exemption from the government, among other options.

What do you think? Are the giant billboards iconic or an eyesore? Let us know in the comments below!
