Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre Performed to a Sold-Out Audience with GREEN AFTERNOON V

Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre presented a sold-out showing of Green Afternoon V, the fifth annual interactive garden installation and performance, at the home of architects Marcia Previti and Peter Gumpel in East Hampton, NY on Saturday, August 5, 2017.

"Green Afternoon V was a spectacular success," said Amanda Selwyn, artistic director of Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre. "The rain cleared and the sun came out as the company shared a preview of my newest choreographic workRefuge in the glorious gardens at the Previti/Gumpel East Hampton home.Refuge will have its World Premiere at Mark Morris Dance Group fromNovember 2-4, 2017. Audience feedback was overwhelmingly positive -- people were engaged and moved by the athleticism, emotion, and imagery of the work."

The evening began at 5pm with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and several outdoor sitting rooms featuring performance installations, with performers dancing in tree houses, on outdoor sculptures, in and around the swimming pool, in the woods, and more. After the moving installations, the audience moved to the lawn for a seated performance of Selwyn's developing work Refuge.

Refuge is a moving collage that maps our relationship to our surroundings, our community, our space, and ourselves. An evening-length dance theatre work, Refuge highlights how we create safe space in our lives. Inspired by Francesco Clemente's art installation, Encampment, Selwyn's company of five dancers dramatize solitude and connection within a delicate landscape of costume and scenic design by Anna-Alisa Belous, sound design by Joel Wilhelmi, and lighting design by Dan Ozminkowski. When seeking personal refuge, we go deep inside ourselves on an internal journey of transformation and enlightenment. Selwyn translates this personal journey into a vocabulary of immediate, athletic, sensuous, and raw movement that has come to define her work. The piece includes a progressive series of solos and duets punctuated by group sections that magnify the personal experience into a shared one.

To get to the performance site from the center of East Hampton, take Montauk Highway/Route 27 to first traffic light past windmill. Turn left onto Accabonac Highway. Drive 4 miles to stop sign at forked intersection. Cross main road and turn right onto north-most fork, Old Stone Highway. Drive 0.25 mile to #230 (mailbox on tree). Please park on main road and walk up drive to first house on right.

Founded in 2000, Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre has presented over 50 productions at NYC venues including Tribeca Performing Arts Center, New York Live Arts, Dance Theatre Workshop, Dance New Amsterdam, Danspace Project, Ailey Citigroup Theater, The Kumble Theater, and John Jay College.
