The Hollywood Reporter writes that ARROW's John Barrowman and the sci-fi/fantasy magazine HEAVY METAL are collaborating on a new miniseries based on Erika Lewis's THE 49TH KEY.

Barrowman is set to star in and executive produce the project with HEAVY METAL's Jeff Krelitz, David Boxenbaum and Jeremy Atkins.

THE 49TH KEY is "based on the 16th century legend of Enochian magic, which tells of a secret language of angels. The first chapter in an expansive fantasy series tells of a ROGUE archeologist and a young autistic and mute boy on a treacherous journey through England to bring the boy home. The boy turns out to be the key to a gateway between our world and that of Enochia, a magical society that exists below the Earth's surface, filled with fantasy creatures and highly advanced humans."

Lewis's story appears in Issue 273 of HEAVY METAL, out today, featuring illustrations by J.K. Woodward. It will continue throughout the year in installments. Lewis worked as a TV exec at Sony, FOX and NBC Universal before starting her writing career.

Aside from ARROW, Barrowman has starred on TV in TORCHWOOD, ANIMALS AT WORK, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, DOCTOR WHO and more. He also recently appeared on the big screen in ZERO DARK THIRTY.

The stage vet has appeared on Broadway in PUTTING IT TOGETHER and SUNSET BOULEVARD. Among his West End credits are ANYTHING GOES, THE FIX, ASPECTS OF LOVE, HAIR, SUNSET BOULEVARD, MATADOR and MISS SAIGON.
