Cats UK Tour review

Hi,

I recently reviewed Cats for the 1st time. I do not know why this show has lasted so long. It got me thinking - do you like Cats? Or is there a show that you do not get, in terms of appeal - yet it is a long runner? Post your thoughts here. Cats review link is below.

Thanks, Glenn

THE SHOW IS S**T all it is is a bunch of other wise out of job adults prancing around in something only an 8 year old kid would wear for halloween! The story is dull and predictable and in all honesty i cant stand anything andrew llyod webbers done as its all so slow and miserable, except starlight express, but only the tour and the german production as they made it more upbeat and lively where the original was dull!

I saw the show about 3 years ago on tour....and i loved it! did not think i would but i really did! I think the comment about out of job adults prancing about is from someone with the brain the size of a pea! firstly if they are in a show how exactly are they out of a job??? secondly the choreography was outstanding, and as for the costume... well i would love to see a better design for a dance musical, of course the story is predictable, it is mainly dance orientated so to try and work a complicated plot in there as well would be someone pointless, i think you have to see it for what it is, which is a fun, bright, detailed (visualy) show, thats puts a smile on most peoples faces! if you go with a stubborn "high art" view then i think you would be very dissapointed. i found it really entertaining and dont see why people hate it so much...and no im not a die hard ALW fan either lol!

Perhaps CHGriffiths would like to explain what he/she means by "a bunch of other wise out of job adults"? Isn't every one of us whatever job you do "otherwise out of work".

Thw whole adults dancing around wah wah wah comment is stupid(its called our jobs)

I have to agree though i do hate the show and im shocked it ran for as long as it did.

I Cant stand webber except for Sunset Boulevard and Beautiful Game everything else is sub standard

and as for starlight arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh WTF, It had some great skating and all the ramps and flashy costumes in London , but now the tour looks cheap , the ramps are gone and the costumes have been left in the 80s (it looks like blue peter threw up on the actors)

Got to agree - Starlight without the spectacle is just awful! When it started it was great to look at and even had a plot. The latter was whittled away over the years in London, then the former disappeared the day it clsoed at the Apollo Victoria re: Cats UK Tour review

However, I've never had a problem with Cats - I saw it for my tenth birthday and it was great! Great dancing, catchy score and attractive girls in lycra. Not had any desire to see it again, but most of the dislike aimed at it appears to be because it ran for so long rather than anything else...

Yeah, I think I agree with the pro-Cats set.

Although it is immature, one must remember that TS Elliott wrote The Old Possum's Book FOR children! And as Elliott was a genius (no matter how difficult to grasp The Wasteland is!), the lyrics are superb.

As for the choreography, it cemented Gillian Lynne as the foremost choreographer of recent theatre. She is just superb. Such technicality in Cats is amazing. Go and see the show for spectacle, catchy tunes and a bit of fun. If you go to it with a high brow, expecting Sweeney Todd attitude then you'll be disappointed. If you want misery, death and socialist propaganda, go to see Les Mis!

The reason that the show ran for so long was because it aimed itself at young children of 8 years of age. Surely that is what should be applauded. It appeales to the younger generation to get them interested in musical theatre? Of course some people will believe that theatre should be reserved to sophisticated literatti, but I disagree. Lloyd Webber and Nunn saw a target audience, grasped it, arranged children's poems to a catchy score and hired a great choreographer and scenic designer to make it a critical and popular success.

Simon.

PS. I agree with Eastwickian about the girls in lycra- one of the many delights of owning the DVD! re: Cats UK Tour review
