Posted: 3/25/07 at 1:04pm
Just read that Jersey Boys is going to be housed at the Prince Edward Theater, and apparently MP is going to be going on tour across the UK...I am shoked!!!
Is there going to be theaters across the UK big enough to house the whole set???

THEY CAN'T CLOSE IT!!!!...Not just after 3 years!!!

Why is the West End just becoming Mini-broadway? I sick to death of these transfers! MP stay, JB away! I'm shocked.

I recall when Miss Saigon closed, the set was so big, it couldn't do a full UK & Irl tour, like most shows do, so they brought the full set to six venues, including the Point here in Dublin, and Manchester, and then they did a scaled down tour elsewhere. Do you think they might do that again? It's a very CamMac thing to do.

Because it is not making enough money anymore?
I absolutely love Mary Poppins, it will be such a loss when it closes - especially for Jersey Boys, of which I like the OBC, but the overall show is really not appealing to me at all!

Jersey boys is amazing

I think if Mary Poppins Plays places like manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool etc it will use the London set as those cities have huge theatres with stages what could accommodate the show

Bloody Hell! I am soooooooooo disheartened !
I cant belive it. Mary Poppins is the best uplifting show in the
west end.
I cant understand why Mary will be closing though a tacky show is still open ?
I am gutted too !!!!!!!!!

I'm not sad at all to see POPPINS go. I don't think it was that good a show to begin with. Sets were great but the book... one crowd-pleasing number after another with almost nothing to connect them...

I am surprised to see POPPINS make way for JERSEY BOYS though! I would have guessed HAIRSPRAY to be the show to make Mary fly away.

Very very unlikely I'm afraid...

Im truly, truly repulsed at the idea of Mary Poppins being replaced by the Jersey Boys - for one, I don't know how UK audiences will get on with the whole Franki Valli thingybob - I mean, Mary Poppins means so much more to so many more people in the UK.

I am glad Mary Poppins will be touring (hopefully). It is a show I want to see but not enough to see in London (I know that makes no sense). I hope it is a sensible tour though, not like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with no discounts.

Going to? The West End has hosted a fair few naff shows over the past few years, one more should make little difference. Especially with Fame and Grease returning...

The simple fact is though even if you hate show like Fame and Grease(i dont, well maybe grease hehe) they make a hell of a lot of money.

Fame is now one of the most profitable musicals in west end HISTORY
Mary poppins tickets have dropped and its a very expensive show to run

And maybe the poor quality of the MP's book is showing in the word-of-mouth.

It'd be interesting to know if MP broke even by the time it plays its final performance.

It'd be interesting to know if MP broke even by the time it plays its final performance.

I'm sure I read that it had recouped in the UK - think it may have been in Baz Bamigboye's blog. Whether that's true or not, I don't know...

I know I keep having a go at Fame (and I will try to ease off!), but it's only because I couldn't believe that they were actually charging people to see it - I'm not a fan of the musical (or the film) anyway, but at the Aldwych the physical production looked cheap and tatty, some of the actors were either terrible or very bored, and it just seemed a very lazy cash-in show. I'm sure that McDonalds is one of the most profitable restaurants in the world, but it doesn't make it any good. But as you say, it's all about the money (and has to be - no-one is going to keep a show running at a loss).

I'll be sad to see Mary Poppins go but it's had a good run (Cats and Les Mis et al being the exception rather than the rule) and it'll be good to see something new in the West End...

Look, don't create a false competition between Mary Poppins and Jersey Boys. JB is waiting for a suitable theatre. It isn't forcing Mary Poppins to close. That decision is a free standing one based on economics. Some other show was going to replace MP sooner or later. So don't blame JB just because it happens to be the next into the theatre.

ThankstoPhantom

How badly, exactly, have ticket sales dropped? I'm not in disbelief, but it's not very satisfying when all I hear is "ticket sales are dropping." I understand what that means, but if anyone here could elaborate more on the extent of the drops, I'd be very grateful.
How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

Mary Poppins isn't closing. They are looking to transfer but with the bis set it is really difficult.

Booking period extend till march 2008, sales have dropped but are still good enough to fill the house. Most shows are about 85% - 90% full so don't worry

The length of the booking period doesn't mean they couldn't close it earlier.
