All the best performers bring to their role something more, something different than what the author put on paper. That's what makes theatre live. That's why it persists. - Stephen Sondheim

Beauty and the Beast:

Julie-Alanah Brighten played Belle
Alistair Harvey played the Beast

Two very amazing leads....they are on the recording!

Michelle Gayle (and subsequently Annalene Beechly) and John Barrowman closed the show in those two roles, respectively.

Heya, I'm not a huge BatB fan but I like it enough and I saw it in August 1999--with Barrowman and Michelle Gayle (who, even though I pay some attention to brit pop Ihad no clue who she was). Barrowman was very strong of course, but Michelle was charming but, when I saw it, not really much else (she did sing the song added to Broadway for Toni Braxton though A Change in Me).

I'm kinda surprised it didn't run longer than 2 years though--it seems like the kinda show London loves--though the theatre was, from what I remember pretty massive, probably the largest audience of any of the theatres we saw shows in.

From the Stiles & Drewe website:

"The Ugly Duckling, or The Aesthetically Challenged Farmyard Fowl" opened at the Watermill Theatre in December 1993.

The show, now titled HONK!, opened at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, England in 1997, directed by Julia McKenzie.

The RNT production toured the UK in 2001 and in addition to the many other productions around the world, a feature film of the show is in development.

I saw BatB then, I was just 8! Nice show! 'Home' is lovely. I also saw it in Dublin on the UK tour. Have the program and album, but I never part with my programs or CDs, sorry!
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

Derek Mahon

Arthur Miller
