New Dusty Springfield Musical Aiming for West End Debut in 2014?

By:

According to the Daily Mail, a new musical based on the life of Dusty Springfield is being developed for a 2014 opening in the West End. Writer and broadcaster Sandi Toksvig, Springfield's former manager and friend Vicki Wickham and THE BODYGUARD's David Ian are part of the creative and producing team.

"Dusty was extraordinary," Wickham told the Mail. "Yes, she could drive you mad -- all divas do. But there's such a lovely side to her that should, and will, be told."

The musical will tell the story of Dusty's life, beginning with her as singer Mary O'Brien and following her eventual rise fame. Springfield became one of the first great female pop stars of the 1960s.

Tunes to be featured include: "Son Of A Preacher Man", "I Only Want To Be With You", "Wishin' And Hopin'", and "Yesterday When I Was Young".

Though the musical will include only musical numbers associated with Dusty, it will be a "proper musical" with a narrative. The show is currently untitled. Once a director is chosen, cast and creative team will be announced. Toksvig will pen the book.

FOREVER DUSTY, another musical about Springfield written by Kirsten Holly Smith and Jonathan Vankin, just ended its run off-Broadway at New World Stages in April.
