EDINBURGH 2026: Review: THE MAN WHO THOUGHT HE KNEW TOO MUCH, Forth, Pleasance Courtyard
A masterclass in physical theatre
Having consistently wowed Fringe audiences, Voloz Collective returns with a welcome revival of their hit show The Man Who Thought He Knew too Much – an undisputed masterclass in physical theatre.
This story follows Roger (Paul Lofferon), an ordinary Frenchman trapped in the rhythmic monotony of New York life. The ensemble brings his daily routine to life through synchronised choreography - slickly catching items tossed blindly behind his back and shifting slicklyinto the background figures of his day, including his secretary, Gretchen (Emily Wheatman). But when Roger makes one unexpected detour from his schedule, he sets off a chain reaction that catapults him into a frantic, globe-trotting mystery.
What follows is an absolute riot: a narrative that grows delightfully absurd through sheer, brilliant execution. Operating on a completely bare stage, the performers use precise body language and movement to conjure vivid environments out of thin air - transporting the audience from deep underwater and outer space to the Arctic and beyond. The cast shapeshifts between dozens of roles with razor-sharp accent work and fluid physical transformations, making every character instantly recognisable.
There is live music throughout the production which really adds to the atmosphere and comedic effect. The combination of clowing, physical theatre, an intelligent script, live music and lighting makes it enjoyable for all ages – a strong recommendation at the Fringe this year.
This is ensemble physical theatre at its absolute peak: meticulously rehearsed, inventive, and impressive from start to finish.
