Theatre Conspiracy’s The 39 Steps is a fast-paced, comic stage adaptation by Patrick Barlow, based on the 1915 novel by John Buchan and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film. Taking over the Off-Broadway Palm stage, this comedy will run from June 13 - 22, with a discounted preview on June 12. It’s Hitchcock by way of Monty Python—equal parts clever and ridiculous, with just enough suspense to keep things moving. Set in 1930s England, the story centers on Richard Hannay, a bored bachelor whose quiet life is upended after a mysterious woman claims to be a spy and winds up murdered in his flat. Suddenly the target of both the police and a ring of foreign agents, Hannay flees to the Scottish Highlands in a frantic attempt to clear his name and stop a national security disaster. What sets the play apart is how it's told: four actors play more than 50 roles, transforming the show into a whirlwind of split-second costume changes, lightning-fast character switches, and theatrical inventiveness. From foggy moors and speeding trains to shadow puppets and plane crashes, the production relies on imagination, timing, and sheer energy. Directed by Rachael Endrizzi, this play features Alex Dagg (Richard Hanratty), Lucy Sundby (Annabella Schmidt, Pamela, & Margaret), Lauren Drexler (Clown 1), and Scott Thomson (Clown 2). Performance Dates: Preview June 12 at 7:30 pm June 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 at 7:30 PM June 22 at 2:00 PM Theatre Conspiracy’s 33rd Season & Farewell Tour is sponsored by Janet & Bruce Bunch.
