St. Pete Earth Day Celebration Coming to Historic Williams Park

On Saturday, April 22nd, and Sunday, April 23rd, 2017, St. Pete-based environmental nonprofit Chart 411 and the City of St. Petersburg are coming together for a St. Pete Earth Day Celebration featuring Creative Loafing in Historic Williams Park (350 2nd Ave. N. in St. Pete).

It's a full weekend of interactive exhibits, educational and recreational family-friendly activities, entertainment on the renownEd Williams Park stage, opportunities to get involved in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable public policies, and much, much more.

This year's St. Pete Earth Day Celebration creates an opportunity for attendees to learn about the challenges we face both locally and globally and how to help create a sustainable future for generations to come. Celebrating Earth Day in one of St. Pete's most beautiful outdoor destinations is a fun, healthy, and interesting way for locals of all ages to have a great time while raising awareness about our fragile planet.

Saturday's free St. Pete Earth Day festival on April 22nd, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., includes more than 150 exhibitors and vendors offering earth-friendly products in the shopping village; a Feeding Frenzy Food Zone featuring food vendors serving up food in low-impact packaging; music by local favorite Moon Mammoth, Trenchfoot Shindig, Jeff Blake, and more; and, of course, craft beer.

This free family-friendly event is slated to fill the park with healthy food alternatives, local vendors selling a variety of goods, complimentary group fitness demos, local craft beer, and more. Williams Park is St. Petersburg's oldest public space - established in 1888 - and one of the most beautiful. It's a real urban oasis, the kind of place to reconnect with nature. This year's International Earth Day theme is "environmental and climate literacy," and Williams Park is ground zero in a region that will be affected dramatically by climate change and sea level rise.

Earth Day was first proclaimed in 1970 to raise public awareness of the need to protect the environment and conserve resources. International Earth Day is now celebrated in April of each year in order to foster environmental awareness in our community and throughout the world. It is now the largest civic movement in the world, involving more than 1 billion people and 50,000 events in 196 countries.

Chart 411 is a St. Petersburg based nonprofit organization whose mission is to make nature, outdoor adventure and environmental education accessible to everyone. Following the advice of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, who said, "people protect what they love," Chart 411 believes that "if you want to teach children to love the earth, get them wet, get them dirty, and get them involved." Chart 411 assumed organizational responsibility for Earth Day last year and continues working with dozens of other nonprofit organizations to host an exciting and engaging event suited to Florida's beautiful environment.
