A moving and uplifting tribute to the tenacity of the human spirit.
Joseph "John" Merrick was an intelligent, courteous, gifted young man who became the toast of Victorian society in the 1880s. Afflicted with a genetic disorder which rendered his appearance too ghastly for normal society he earned a living by displaying himeself in freak shows.
Merrick is rescued from his existence as a sideshow freak and the tyranny of owner by a surgeon from London Hospital, Frederick Treves. Treves, who is originally motivated by professional curiosity, gradually learns that within the husk of misshapen bone and fungus-like skin lurks a sensitive intellect and romantic soul. Treves sets about to socialise Merrick by introducing him to high society figures such as the famous actress Mrs Kendall and Princess Alexandria.
Winner of the 1979 Tony Award for 'Best Play' and 2015 Drama Desk Award for 'Best Revival of a Play', this classic play continues to inspire generations.
The forthcoming production, directed by the acclaimed Debbie Smith, features a wonderful cast with Harley Connor as John Merrick; Nicholas Gledhill as Frederick Treves; Melanie Robinson as Mrs Kendall; William Jordan as Ross (Merrick's nasty manager); Marty O'Neill as Carr Gomm; Peter Hayes as Bishop How; Denise Kitching as Miss Sandwich; Madeleine Solomon; Claire Brew and Eoin O'Sullivan.
Don’t miss this rarely performed play.
