South Bend Civic Theatre Presents STEEL MAGNOLIAS, 9/7-23

By:

The ladies of Trudy’s hair salon share small town gossip and bond beyond their differences. When tragedy hits home, the women rely on life-long friendships to see them through. Described as "by turns hilarious and poignant, Steel Magnolias shows the enduring bonds of a remarkable group of women."

Director Debra Godwalt-Swerman leads Shelly Ambrosiak, Elizabeth Bonne, Martha Branson-Banks, Pam Gunterman, Michelle Miller, and MarTy Smith.

Director Debra Godwalt-Swerman describes Steel Magnolias: “This play is about 6 women. Six women who come together on a weekly basis and share their lives in Truvy's beauty salon. They share the joyous, the hilarious and the tragic. Through it all they hold each other up with the strength of steel and courage. How do they do it? They are women. As M'Lynn says, “Men are supposed to be the ones made of steel or something”. But it's the women, beautiful as a creamy pink Magnolia, that are made of steel. Steel Magnolias.

“I have directed this play twice now. Both times I am captivated by the fact that these women are the women that we see every day. We can relate to these women because these women are our friends, our mothers, our grandmothers, our daughters. They are the women that we strive to be. They are the women that no matter what life throws them, they stand up against it and are there for each other. One audience member stated, “I want to hang out with these women!” I think that sums it up nicely.”

Steel Magnolias performs in the Wilson Mainstage Auditorium, 403 N Main St in South Bend, September 7-23. Tickets are $15 Wednesdays (7:30 PM), $18 Friday, Saturday (8:00 PM), and Sunday (3:00 PM).
