Works by Athol Fugard, Edward Albee and Agatha Christie Set for Play Club's HOOKED ON CLASSICS Series, Aug-Oct

Play Club, Cape Town's Book Club for Theatre Lovers, will continue their rave-reviewed afternoons with a brand new series just in time for winter: "Hooked On Classics". This series will feature some of theatre's classics with scripts by Athol Fugard, Edward Albee and Agatha Christie.

In August, we celebrate Play Club's first South African script by South African playwright, Athol Fugard: PEOPLE ARE LIVING THERE. It's a penetrating psychological study of frustration and loneliness as four people spend an evening together in the kitchen of a cheap Johannesburg boarding house where they live. PEOPLE ARE LIVING THERE will be presented on Sunday 18 August.

For September, we look at one of Broadway's great plays: Edward Albee's biting dark comedy WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? In its 1963 premiere, it won the Tony Award for Best Play, along with a rave review from the New York Herald-Tribunes, who called it "a beautiful piece of writing." Albee examines the breakdown of the marriage of a middle-aged couple, Martha and George. After a university faculty party, they receive an unwitting younger couple as guests one evening and draw them into their bitter and frustrated relationship. WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? will be read on Sunday 15 September.

And just in time of Halloween, Play Club spends an evening with the Queen of Mystery herself, Agatha Christie, in her ultimate murder story from 1945, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. Ten guilty strangers are trapped on an island. One by one they are accused of murder; one by one they start to die. In this superlative mystery comedy, statuettes of little soldier boys on the mantel of the manor they are trapped in fall to the floor and break, one by one, as those in the house succumb to a diabolical avenger! A nursery rhyme tells how each of the ten "soldiers" met his death ... until there were none. AND THEN THERE WERE NONE will be featured in Play Club on Sunday 20 October.

Play Club is currently looking forward to its final play in the series "Identity": the comedy that won every major award in the theatre, Bruce Norris's CLYBOURNE PARK. It explodes in two outrageous acts, set 50 years apart. Act One takes place in 1959, as nervous community leaders anxiously try to stop the sale of a home to a black family. Act Two is set in the same house in the present day, as the now predominantly African-American neighborhood battles to hold its ground in the face of gentrification. The play is to be read in Sanders' Showroom in Salt River. Please note: the play features strong language and deals candidly with some issues that may be upsetting to some. CLYBOURNE PARK is scheduled for Sunday 21 July.

Play Club is Book Club for Theatre Lovers. It is a monthly initiative of Chase The Sun to build a community among theatre lovers. This brings a well-established New York theatre platform, where the simplicity of a script reading becomes an intimate forum to discover the best modern plays, debut new talent and allow for engaged discussions. The panel consists of top industry professionals to add commentary and insight, making it a truly memorable evening. Play Club has played host to some of South Africa's top and up-and-coming actors, directors, educators, filmmakers, producers, playwrights and composers, all mixed with theatregoers who share their passion for the theatre.
