The run of the award-winning and critically acclaimed HEMELRUIM at The Fugard Theatre has been extended due to overwhelming demand. HEMELRUIM is the translation of Nick Payne's runaway Broadway and West End hit CONSTELLATIONS.

HEMELRUIM is a beautiful story of two souls, who keep drifting in and out of each others' lives, in an honest, raw and moving journey through the stars, filled with love, science and honey. The play is performed by two of South Africa's top actors, Paul du Toit and Tinarie van Wyk Loots, with young theatre visionary Nico Scheepers handling the direction, the design, the music and the translation of the text.

CONSTELLATIONS won the 2012 Evening Standard Award for Best New Production, while HEMELRUIM has won Best Actress awards at Aardklop and the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees, as well as a 2016 Fiësta Award. BroadwayWorld South Africa's review of the production summarised the production as follows:

HEMELRUIM is a deeply personal and moving piece of theatre. When the lights finally dim to black, one feels as though something has landed deep within one's soul.... HEMELRUIM is as beautiful as it is profound, like everything we wish on those nights when, alone, we gaze upon the stars.

Previously seen on the Fugard Theatre stage in the sold-out run of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, Paul du Toit returns fresh from his Fleur du Cap win as Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Musical for his incredible transition as the title character in HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH. He is also a much-loved screen actor in television shows such as BINNELANDERS and 7DE LAAN and on the big screen in films such as BEYOND THE RIVER, MIGNON MOSSIE VAN WYK and TROUVOETE.

In addition to her accolades for HEMELRUIM, Tinarie van Wyk Loots's awards include a Kanna for Best Actress in BABBEL and a Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards nomination for her role as Titania in A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. Other credits in her extensive career include DOGMA, DIE REBELLIE VAN LAFRAS VERWEY, DIE KERSIEBOORD, IN GLAS, LOT and ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA.

Nico Scheepers comes to the Fugard hot off the run of his play MOEDERTAAL at the KKNK, starring Sandra Prinsloo. His other acclaimed productions include WENTEL, with Anna-Mart van der Merwe; the 2017 Kyknet Fiësta Best Production, ROOIVALK; and the award-winning AMPER VRYSTAAT. He is currently working on DIE FLIEK, a translation of Annie Baker's Pulitzer Prize-winning THE FLICK, and will collaborate with Hennie van Greunen for a new production at the Innibos Festival this year.

HEMELRIUM will now be performed at the Fugard Studio Theatre until Saturday 20 May. Performances will take place from Wednesday to Friday at 20:00 and on Saturday at 16:00 and 20:00. The production is in Afrikaans, with English subtitles. The Fugard Theatre is situated in the heart of District Six, on the corner of Harrington and Caledon Streets, Cape Town. Tickets cost R130 - R165 and can be booked online through Computicket, by phone on 0861 915 8000, or in person at any Shoprite Checkers outlet. Bookings can also be made at the Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554.
