PATCHWORK

With the Muizenberg Festival having kicked off its week-long run yesterday, ASSITEJ SA is delighted to stage three dynamic performances this coming weekend: UNMUTE, PAIRED and PATCHWORK.

UNMUTE will be performed on 13 October at Muizenberg High School . Choreographed by acclaimed deaf dancer and choreographer Andile Vellem, UNMUTE tells Vellem's story of finding his voice as a choreographer, using sign language as the source of the movement vocabulary. The performers in the piece, all from different dance backgrounds and different abilities, find and explore what they would like to "un-mute" - feelings, perceptions, social norms and expectations - and deconstruct what society perceives as dance. Joining Vellum on stage are Nadine McKenzie, Themba Mbuli and Zama Sonjica. The performance runs from 18:00 - 19:00, and a panel discussion on inclusivity and accessibility for persons with disabilities with the Believe in Schatzi Organisation, which assists young adults and children with special needs to develop greater independence, social confidence and the skills required to live self-driven lives, follows from 19:15 - 20:00. Tickets cost R80. Preview UNMUTE in the video clip below:

Magnet Theatre's PAIRED and Pillow Fort Productions's PATCHWORK take place at Alive Dance Studio at 10:00 on 15 and 16 October respectively. Tickets for these productions cost R30 for children and R60 for adults.

Aimed at 2 - 7 year olds, PAIRED is about a group of shoes. Each journeys to find its pair, searches for a partner, and longs to belong. Directed by Lwanda Sindaphi, PAIRED is performed by Livie Ncanywa, Meagen Booysen, Natasha Gana and Lwando Magwanca and designed by Craig Leo.

PATCHWORK is suitable for 2-5 year olds and deals with a familiar, but mysterious familiar environment: the bedroom: the crib when we used to sleep when we were little, mum and daddy's big bed on the morning of our birthday, the bed where we had to stay when we were ill with the flu or chickenpox, the place where we found shelter after a fight with our parents and where we waited for the monster to come out of the wardrobe. This is the place where the comfort of home meets the strange world of dreams. Sheets become oceans, nests and cathedrals; pillows transform into companions. Flickering lights, live African instruments, shadows, fabrics and puppets form a landscape of experience through which little travellers can walk, run or be carried. Directed by Joana Evans, PATCHWORK is performed by Roshina Ratnam, Asanda Rilityana, and Pedro Espi-Sanchis. Take a look here:
