As the theater community in NYC continues to get back on its feet following the pandemic, two new theaters have just been added to the mix as La MaMa re-opened its landmark theaters at 74A E. 4 St. – following a 3-year, $24 million renovation.
Identical is based on the novel ‘The Parent Trap’ by Erich Kästner, which inspired the Disney films featuring Hayley Mills in 1961 and Lindsay Lohan in 1998. Destined for the West End, it will open at Nottingham Playhouse 26 July – 14 August 2022, then transfer to Salford’s The Lowry 19 August – 3 September 2022. Check out rehearsal photos here!
Building on a tradition. That has been the credo of the North Fork Community Theatre (NFCT) for quite some time now. The uplifting story starts in 1956 with an advert calling for people interested in starting an amateur theatre. After years of performing in schools on the north fork of Long Island, they moved into their current building in 1961.
Award-winning Retro Productions kicks off its 2019 season with one of the longest running Broadway comedies of the 1960's, Mary, Mary written by Jean Kerr. The witty revival runs May 3 - 18 at the Gene Frankel Theatre in SoHo. Shay Gines who previously directed Retro's revival of And Mrs. Reardon Drinks A Little, directs. Opening night is slated for Friday, May 3.
One of the city's oldest, continuously operating theater companies, La MaMa, celebrated the conclusion of its 55th season, and announced the $15 million renovation of its New York City landmark building at 74 East 4th Street in Manhattan with "Dancing in The Street", a BLOCK PARTY on Saturday, May 20th from 11AM to 4PM. La MaMa just celebrated its 55th season with a singular Gala Event like no other last night, November 10, at La MaMa Annex (66 E.4 St.). The Grammy-winning, co-author of the Tony-winning musical THE COLOR PURPLE and legendary party-hostess Allee Willis threw one of her renowned bashes, created especially as a benefit for La MaMa: BADEYA BABY! or HOW I LEARNED TO LOVE THE THEATRE.
Broadway fans had plenty of reasons to celebrate this year, with dozens of shows having opened since January, hundreds of actors having made their debuts, and many more having returned to the stage for critically acclaimed performances. Not all news was good though, as we also suffered a loss of an incredible amount of talent.

DISASTER!, a 1970's disaster movie musical written by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick began previews Off-Broadway on Monday, October 14th at the St. Luke's Theatre (308 W. 46th Street). Directed by Mr. Plotnick, with choreography by Denis Jones, DISASTER! is a hilarious send up of the disaster movie genre featuring some favorite songs from the '70s. Last night, October 27, Career Transition For Dancers (CTFD) presented its 9th Annual Gala - GOTTA DANCE! A Dance Tribute to Hollywood at City Center. BroadwayWorld attended the gala as well as the dress rehearsal earlier in the day. The nostalgic evening honored and paid tribute to that wonderful era when some of the most superb in dance and choreography was immortalized on film.
