Broadway is being dominated by rock musicals. Not only have rock musicals been written by great musical theatre composers like as Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Schwartz, Tom Kitt, Jason Robert Brown and the late Jonathan Larsen, now they are now also being written by true pop recording artists. Cyndi Lauper wrote Kinky Boots; Sheryl Crow is writing Diner; Regina Spektor wrote Beauty; Tori Amos' The Light Princess is up and running in London; Sting wrote The Last Ship; Sara Bareilles is currently writing Waitress. The musicals Motown and Beautiful have followed in the footsteps of jukebox musicals such as Jersey Boys, Rock Of Ages, and Priscilla Queen of the Desert- using authentic Motown and 70s folk/rock music to tell their stories. BroadwayWorld has teamed with Sheri to bring you an exclusive, two-part lecture, in which she shares her vast expertise on the everything rock musicals. Check out Part One of the lecture below and tune in tomorrow to watch as she helps her students to prepare for a rock musical audition!
