Andrew Lloyd Webber began his career in musical theatre in the 1960s, partnering with lyricist Tim Rice. Their early works included The Likes of Us (1965), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968; expanded into a full-length stage musical in 1972), Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), and Evita (1978). He also collaborated with Alan Ayckbourn on Jeeves (1975), later revised as By Jeeves (1996).
