The iconic rock musical Hair is back in a bold new Brazilian production directed by Charles Möeller and Claudio Botelho. Opening at São Paulo’s BTG Pactual Hall, the show celebrates the spirit of the 1960s counterculture — peace, love, and rebellion — through powerful anthems like Aquarius and Let the Sunshine In. With a cast of 30 led by Rodrigo Simas and Eduardo Borelli, this vibrant staging fuses rock, poetry, and raw emotion to explore freedom, identity, and protest in a turbulent era. Nearly six decades after its debut, Hair still pulses with youthful defiance and idealism, inviting audiences to sing, reflect, and feel the rhythm of a revolution that never truly ended.

The lyrical season will feature 12 titles, such as Turandot, by Busoni, Gianni Schicchi, by Puccini, Le Comte Ory, by Rossini, among others. Voices Inside in collaboration with Nylon Fusion Theatre Company and Pen America present Sentenced To A Life Without Music, an evening of one-act plays by incarcerated writers. This special limited engagement will be presented at The Wild Project (195 E 3rd St, New York, NY 10009), September 21-25. 

The show has lyrics and music by Zeca Baleiro and Newton Moreno, with musical direction by Marco França and features Cassio Scapin as the corrupt and demagogue Odorico Paraguacu, candidate for mayor of Sucupira. As there is no cemetery in the city, which forces residents to bury their dead in neighboring municipalities, the politician is elected with the slogan “Vote for a serious man and win a cemetery”!

On March 11th 2020 Mint Theater Company completed casting for their next production, the long delayed American premiere of Chains by Elizabeth Baker, scheduled to open that May.  

THE DJANGO, downtown Manhattan’s premier jazz club, will continue to host today’s jazz legends and rising stars. On February 3, The Django celebrates the fifth anniversary of the Brooklyn-based record label, La Reserve, with special performances by the label’s artists.

The lyrical series will include eleven titles: La Serva Padrona; Livietta and Tracollo; The Capulets and the Montechios, by Bellini; West Side Story; Lecture on Waterbirds; Threepenny Opera, by Weill; Ariadne in Naxos, by Strauss; Viva La Mamma, by Donizetti and El Barberillo de Lavapies, among others.

Mint Theater Company will conclude the highly popular Silver Lining Streaming Series with the on-demand streaming of the three-camera archival recording (filmed in HD!) of The Fatal Weakness by George Kelly, beginning Monday May 17th, and continuing through June 27th.

The play portrays the career of actress Lyson Gaster, stage name of Augustine Belber Pastor, Spanish created in Piracicaba, who with his revue theater company traveled Brazil in the 1920s, 30s and 40s to great success. The show stays until December 15 at Teatro Alfredo Mesquita, then continues season from January 18 to February 15 at the Teatro Italia.

A longtime advocate for music suppressed by the Nazi regime, Polish-Canadian pianist Daniel Wnukowski (vnoo-koff'-skee) makes his New York debut this February as part of a festival dedicated to the music of Galician-Jewish composer Karol Rathaus (1895-1954). Little-known today, Rathaus was a protege of Franz Schreker and built a successful career in Berlin before fleeing in 1932 due to the deteriorating political situation in Germany. He first migrated to Paris, then to London in 1934. He settled in New York in 1938 and joined the music faculty of Queens College two years later as its first professor of composition.
