Zanna, Don't!

In September, New Conservatory Theatre Center will kick off its 2018-2019 Season with the San Francisco premiere of the delectable, campy satire, Red Scare on Sunset. Directed by Allen Sawyer and starring San Francisco drag cabaret sensation, J. Conrad Frank, Red Scare on Sunset is full of "outrageous plot twists, chicanery and a finale that careens over the top" (LA Weekly). Written by the Tony-nominated playwright of The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, Charles Busch, this lavish comedy delightfully defangs the McCarthyism that took the world by storm. It's 1950's Hollywood and the Cold War is about to come knocking on silver-screen star Mary Dale's palatial front door: her husband's Method acting class is a front for the Communist party and threatens to destroy everything she holds dear. Mary must rally to defend her marriage, Hollywood and the American way in this outrageously funny and ironically timely parody.

Island City Stage's hit musical 'Zanna Don't' has been extended through Feb. 18. The additional performances will be Thursday-Saturday at 8:00 and Sunday at 7:00pm.

Do not be confused by the title. This musical fairy tale is not based on the 1980s Olivia Newton John movie Xanadu. However, author Tim Acito did purposely reference the film in his title because he hoped to emulate that same feeling of sweetness and magic. Like Olivia Newton Johns' character in Xanadu, who was a mystical muse sent to Earth to inspire men, the leading character of Zanna, Don't! is a magical matchmaking teen named Zanna (Conor Walton). With the help of his magic wand, Zanna tends to the hearts and lives of all around him in this fantastical tale touting a humorous and hopeful message of tolerance and acceptance.

The joyous and gleeful musical 'Zanna Don't' bounds its way into Island City Stage to ring in the New Year with heart and hope. With book, music and lyrics by Tim Acito (with additional book and lyrics by Alexander Dinelaris, a former Barry University student) the musical became a surprise Off Broadway hit in 2003 and made a star out of Jai Rodriguez, who went on to be a regular on the popular tv series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

Thrill Me: The Leopold & Loeb Story is an award-winning Off-Broadway musical written by Stephen Dolginoff. It tells the true-life tale of famed murderers Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb. Leopold and Loeb, dubbed the 'thrill killers' were tried for murder in 1924 after attempting to commit 'the perfect crime.'

Kokandy Productions is pleased to celebrate its fifth anniversary with an expanded season featuring four fully produced musicals, including two Chicago premieres and two guest directors. The 2017/18 Season will also include numerous readings and workshops - adding fresh voices to Kokandy's "New Works Initiative" and emphasizing the company's commitment to becoming an increasingly relevant part of Chicagoland's musical theater and new work development communities. Lipuma, announces a one-week extension to Company, featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. The production is directed by William Brown. Company features original orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, Orchestral Reductions by Ian Weinberger, music direction by Tom Vendafreddo and choreography by Brock Clawson. The show, originally slated to run through July 31, 2016, will add an additional week, through August 7, in the Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols Theatre at 325 Tudor Court, Glencoe.
