13th Street Rep To Hold EDDIE CANTOR DAY November 21

Tuesday, November 21st, will be 'Eddie Cantor Day' at the historic 13th Street Repertory Theater (50 W. 13th St., NYC), where Chip Deffaa's show 'Irving Berlin: In Person' is now playing. For 50 years, entertainer Eddie Cantor and songwriter Irving Berlin were friends. Berlin provided Cantor with some of his biggest hits, from 'Mandy' to 'You'd Be Surprised.' Cantor was singing Berlin songs (such as 'Araby') in vaudeville even before he rose to stardom in the Ziegfeld Follies (for which Berlin was a major songwriter). And Cantor continued to sing Berlin songs in films, on radio, and on TV. In 'Irving Berlin: In Person,' Jon Peterson (portraying Berlin) speaks of Berlin and sings/dances 'Mandy.' (more...)

Florida Studio Theatre Announces New Summer Play Reading Workshops

Following a well-received Sarasota Festival of New Plays this past spring, Florida Studio Theatre (FST) announces an addition to its New Play Development program. Three new works will be staged throughout the month of August featuring some of the latest work by George Brant, Barry Harman and Keith Herrmann, and Sandy Rustin. "Good comedies with exciting stories are hard to find and we have found three well-crafted tales from various eras, points of view, and comedic angles," shared FST Associate Artist Catherine Randazzo. Talkbacks will follow each reading, giving audiences the chance to engage with each piece more deeply, while also giving playwrights valuable feedback. These readings are free and open to the public, though reservations are required. (more...)

Her newest project The Moonlight Sessions Volume One is a knockout with some of the finest orchestrations and vocal arrangements to be heard anywhere  ... period. This is her fourth major album in five years, with Volume Two to be released in August. Stanley puts a lot of love into the enterprise; this goes without saying. Especially with ths project which had its beginning on FB with a secret society of members who helped with the promotion. Rickie Lee Jones is a singer-songwriter, musician, and producer who has created music in a variety of styles, including jazz, pop, rock, R&B, soul and blues over the course of her five-decade career. She has won two Grammy Awards: Best New Artist in 1980, and Best Jazz Vocal Collaboration in 1991, for her cover of "Makin' Whoopee" with Dr. John. In June, 2015, the documentary The Other Side of Desire was released, which followed Rickie as she created a studio album of the same name, her first in ten years. This year, a living legend of musical theatre turns 90: Lyricist-bookwriter Tom Jones (who also, under a stage name) appeared in the original company of his most famous and wildly successful record-breaking musical, The Fantasticks. His collaborator, composer Harvey Schmidt, just recently passed away. The production's record-breaking run closed, on January 13, 2002, after 17,162 performances. Their shows also include 110 in the Shade, I Do! I Do!, Philemon, Celebration and many more. And celebration is what it's about when Broadway veterans Carole Demas, who originated the role of Sandy in Grease, and Sarah Rice, who originated the role of Johanna in Sweeney Todd, return to celebrate Jones & Schmidt. Demas and Rice have based the show on their 50 years of work and personal relationships with Tom and Harvey. With very special guest Broadway's Hal Robinson who is also a Fantasticks alumni.
